The Odyssey Will Hit Disc And Digital On The Same Day

Here’s something you almost never see. The release date for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey on home video has been set, and it will hit all formats simultaneously. Blu-Ray, 4K, DVD and digital will all be served the latest version of Homer’s epic on the same day: November 17.

It’s become standard procedure for movies to arrive on digital first, then physical formats later, by a padding of two weeks to a month. I’ve never understood why that is…either it’s to juice up the digital sales side of things (which is no longer necessary), or it’s because the time required to prep, print and ship physical discs creates a discrepancy between one format and the other. Universal and Nolan have just proven if either issue exists, they can be sidestepped.

Of course the time from theater to home is also longer in this case. Since The Odyssey was released on July 17, there will be a theatrical exclusivity of four months for Nolan’s movie, which is even longer than the 100-plus day wait it took for his Oppenheimer to show up anywhere else. In this particular case, The Odyssey is now the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, beating out Deadpool & Wolverine (which, released in 2024, did not get to enjoy its position for long).

The press release made no mention of bonus features, which doesn’t mean they aren’t there…November’s a ways off; we could be getting a more detailed announcement before then.

The Odyssey stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Zendaya as Athena, Robert Pattinson as Arrogant Scheming Guy Who Wants The Throne and Charlize Theron as Calypso. It’ll be released to home formats November 17.
