A statement by NetherRealm Studios marketing manager Brian Goodman has put the internet fanbase for the upcoming fighting game, Mortal Kombat X, in a tailspin. A remark he made to IGN, hints that the game could feature the dreaded feature of microtransactions for the game.
His remark was very vague, and it was in no way of confirmation that the game will have micro-transactions, but it was suggestive enough to cause concern among fans. Goodman stated, “We are not releasing any details on that yet,” on the subject if microtransactions would be included in the game. He continued, “Nothing to say about microtransactions yet.” It sounds like a vague, PR-speak type of answer.
Microtransactions is a system where players can buy virtual goods for a game via online micro-payments. They are typically found in mobile titles, but they are sometimes rather infamously incorporated into major triple-A video game releases. NetherRealm Studios used microtransactions for its mobile release of Injustice: Gods Among Us. Sometimes microtransactions can be used as a quick shortcut for certain items that can still be unlocked by putting more time into a game. Microtransactions are generally popular among fans, especially when they are used for a game players already had to shell out upwards of $60 for, along with additional funds for downloadable content or a Season Pass.
Goodman saying “yet” seems to be an indication that NetherRealm Studios is planning to use microtransactions for Mortal Kombat X. However, it is still too early to know for sure. Mortal Kombat X is due out on April 14. The game will be available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Windows PC.
