Playstation Goes 100% Digital In 2028

Let me tell you a story. Every day when I get out of bed, the first thing I do is turn on my computer and load up the Internet. My default tab lately is Bluesky. I boot it up on the morning of July 1 and this is the first post I see:

People asking how I expect this to affect our game stores, so I'll try to summarize:1. There will always be demand for games at inclusive price points2. This decision very much affects which things can fall into those price points, & may push more phys games into "collectible" territory(cont)

Followed by this:

Spending my morning writing a statement for press inquiries about all this when all I want to do is say "consumers haven't had purchasing power in about ten years now because we gave all of our money to like ten weird guys, what did you all expect"

And then this:

Good Evening, “video games” was a 45 year sociological study conducted by hardware development industries. We are now complete with our study. Thank you for your time.

I just got out of bed. I haven’t had any contact with the world at large outside of this social network. I have no idea what anyone’s talking about. But at this point, I’m thinking any one of the following things have happened:

  1. Gamestop is shutting down (not unexpected)
  2. Microsoft has left the gaming business
  3. Sony has left the gaming business
  4. The ENTIRE VIDEO GAME INDUSTRY has just crashed and EVERYONE is leaving the gaming business
  5. Aliens are invading the Earth

Since nothing feels impossible anymore, it could be any one of those things. Eventually, about 70 panic-posts later, someone actually speaks clearly enough for me to divine what happened while I slept: Sony just announced they were ceasing production of physical PS5 discs by 2028.

And I thought…..that’s IT??

First off, how is this just NOW hitting you? It’s been heading this direction for a long, long, loooong time. The latest figures show digital sales make up 80% of Playstation game purchases, and on XBox it’s closer to 90%. Rockstar just said GTA 6 would be a digital-only game. “This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs,” said Sid Shuman, senior director SIE content communications, as the news was broken. “This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.”

Second, as it stands, there’s virtually no difference between a PS5 physical disc and a PS5 digital copy. The games are so AAA and bloated that a disc lens cannot read the data fast enough, so the entire thing is dumped onto the hard drive. The Switch’s idea of physical game cards is nice because it actually does save space (at least when it’s not a key card)…they are able to read from the card. A PS5 physical game is a digital game that you have to insert a disc to play. It’s been reduced to an extra annoying step.

Third, a digital game does not literally disappear, even after it leaves the market. A copy of that game on a physical drive is, technically, still physical in some form. People are worried about preservation and true to Sony’s tone-deaf nature, they immediately confirmed consumer fears by announcing that they were shutting down the PS3 and Vita storefronts, RIGHT AFTER they made the announcement they were going all digital. Not even kidding.

“As the PlayStation Store continues to evolve to support modern commerce systems, including updated payment processing standards, PS3 and PS Vita are no longer able to support these updates at the level required,” Shuman said. Sony actually tried to shut these storefronts down five years ago, but reversed that decision due to outcry.

Well…guess what. The Wii digital market has been offline for years, but all of its games still exist…on the high seas. They call it piracy, but in this form, it’s really preservation. A complete library of Vita games already exists this way.

I’m old enough to remember a world where the only way to keep something you liked was to preserve it yourself. All television was linear and they didn’t sell TV show seasons in packages. You had to buy a blank VHS tape and record the show you liked. Otherwise, you’d probably never see it again. I still perform this practice, in a sense — I download the streaming shows I like after I’ve watched them legitimately through Netflix or Hulu or wherever. It’s the solid copy that I would gladly pay for and can’t get. There was this brief period of time when companies cared about preserving media as much as I did, because it produced a nice profit for them. But that profit window vanished and they stopped. Traditionally, they don’t care, never have and never will. You gotta do the preserving yourself.

Games going digital does not mean the sky is falling and that you own nothing…not yet, anyway. You ask me what I get nervous about, and it’s the possibility that in the future, games could be entirely in the cloud, streaming from a server. It would be impossible to preserve games in such a form, through any method, and it would also be harder for indie developers to enter such a market to begin with. When we get anywhere close to that, THEN start worrying.

I'm really curious about the shift to 100% digital. It's exciting to think about the convenience it could bring, but I do have some concerns about preserving games long-term. I remember when titles got delisted from stores and suddenly became nearly impossible to get, like when P.T. disappeared. It'd be a shame if we lost access to classics down the line. At the same time, the potential for game libraries to be updated and expanded instantly is a huge plus. With Horizon Forbidden West coming out next week, it's a great time to think about the future of gaming! What do you think about the potential for game preservation in a fully digital world?
