The Walking Dead Director Talks Fan Backlash
This past Sunday saw the return of The Walking Dead on AMC, but it wasn’t met with a warm welcome back by fans and critics. The Season 7 premiere drew the ire of fans and critics alike in many ways. While some praised its ability to fake out fans, yet stay true to the comics, while others panned the “excessive” violence that the episode had.
The director of the episode Greg Nicotero, did an interview with The Walking Dead Insider (noted by Comicbook.com) and spoke about the reaction fans and critics had to the premiere episode, including some saying that they were done with the series because of what happened.
“That means we have done something to affect these people in a way they don’t necessarily know how to process,” Nicotero said. “I’m a big Game Of Thrones fan and I’ve been shocked at the turn of events on that show, but I still love it.”
He went on to note that though some have said they’ve left the show, he encourages them to come back, as the show is still great despite the horrors they witnessed. He added: “It’s a knee jerk reaction that people have because they care about these characters. If we killed someone and they didn’t care and they’re like ‘Okay no big deal I’m just gonna go have a bagel and not worry about it’, than that means we haven’t done something to connect our people to the characters. It’s unfortunate that people want to take a negative spin on it because as far as I’m concerned I’m dedicated to watching a show to see where it goes next.”
The Walking Dead Season 7 is currently airing on Sunday on AMC.
