Summer Games Done Quick Moves Online
Originally, Summer Games Done Quick 2020 was to be held from June 21-28 in Bloomington, Minnesota. But as it turns out, a LOT can happen in just six months. The event was delayed to August, and a special weekend edition was launched in April which raised $400,000 for Direct Relief.
With August barrelling towards us, it doesn’t look like COVID-19 is going to disappear by late summer. SGDQ could theoretically still be done in a hotel ballroom, but a lot of social distancing and sanitizing would need to be involved. Rather than bother with that, the GDQ organizers have decided to make Summer Games Done Quick 2020 a strictly online affair.
“We will move the event to online-only, broadcasting the event from our studio with participants performing speedruns from the safety of their homes,” explained the staff in a post to the official website. “As we prioritize the health and safety of everyone who attends GDQ events, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the on-site portion of Summer Games Done Quick 2020 and instead proceed with an online-only event.”
As for what games will be run, no one knows yet. Submissions don’t open until June 8, and the schedule will not be posted until July 13. Super Metroid is one safe bet.
The world needs charity events more than ever….so the show must go on, if a bit altered from what was intended. Summer Games Done Quick 2020 will be held online from August 16 through August 23.
