Scott Pilgrim Takes Off in just 51 days. The anime version of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s awkward tale of love, conflict and Pac-Man will premiere on Netflix this November, and the streamer released an advance clip from the miniseries this morning. It’s brief, but there are a couple things it reveals that we didn’t know previously.
This is the scene where Scott schemes to set up a meeting between himself and Ramona Flowers, but it plays out a bit differently: instead of an Amazon delivery girl, Ramona is delivering DVDs for Netflix. This is a pretty hilarious change: it’s not only meta, but Netflix officially retired their DVD mailing service just this month, and those DVDs were sent through the mail system, not delivered by specific people.
Given that, and the fact that Scott is using a computer with a CRT monitor, this clip suggests the show doesn’t take place in the present, but at the time the book and live-action movie came out — around the late 2000s or early 2010s. The other possibility is that this IS the present and Scott just has a crappy old computer. Both are possible.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is being produced by Science Saru, whose previous credits include Devilman Crybaby and Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! And the English version stars EVERYONE from the movie: Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim; Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona Flowers; Satya Bhabha as Matthew Patel; Kieran Culkin as Wallace Wells; Chris Evans as Lucas Lee; Anna Kendrick as Stacey Pilgrim; Brie Larson as Envy Adams; Alison Pill as Kim Pine; Aubrey Plaza as Julie Powers; Brandon Routh as Todd Ingram; Jason Schwartzman as Gideon Graves; Johnny Simmons as Young Neil; Mark Webber as Stephen Stills; Mae Whitman as Roxie; and Ellen Wong as Knives Chau.
That’s not all: Anamanaguchi, who did the music for the Scott Pilgrim video game, is creating original songs for the anime, so this thing is like a blend of all Scotts Pilgrimi that currently exist. You’ll fall in lesbians with Scott Pilgrim Takes Off when it releases November 17.
