Two months ago, a video for some unannounced Sonic game called “Sonic Toys Party” was leaked to the Internet. Very little was known about it, other than it seemed to be for mobile devices and it took a lot of inspiration from Fall Guys. As of today Sega has officially revealed the game, and while much of the new trailer matches the prototype, it’s all going by a new name: Sonic Rumble.
The toy aspect of the original title is intact; you’re controlling Sonic-shaped toys come to life, much like in Smash Bros (though that’s the only similarity). There’s a backstory here, something about Dr. Eggman creating a magic board game and sucking the entire Sonic cast into it. If I were Sonic, I wouldn’t be happy about that, but they all appear to be in a chipper mood.
If you know how to play Fall Guys, you get the idea here: 32 players are teleported onto a track and run around until everybody except one player has been eliminated, whether that’s through hitting obstacles or being bumped off the track. Sonic Rumble, however, adds collectibles to the formula. You can grab rings from the track and spend them later on cosmetics like new costumes or additional characters.
Sega hasn’t committed to s release day for Sonic Rumble, but they’ve posted a vague window of “Winter 2024” for iOS and Android devices. Sounds like around the time Sonic The Hedgehog 3 hits theaters. Makes sense. There will also be a beta test held from May 24 through May 26; go to the official Sonic Rumble site to sign up.
