The free streaming channel Retrocrush mostly focuses on classic anime, except when they don’t. A perfect case in point would be today. They’ve announced the addition of several shows to the library, but not all of them fall under the category of “Made in Japan.”
Medabots definitely does. Originally released in the US through Fox Kids, it’s another one of those shows from the late 90s that tried to ride Pokemon‘s coattails. The difference is that they’re robots instead of monsters, and instead of Team Rocket you have the “Rubberrobo Gang.” A more obscure anime called Night Of The Galactic Railroad from 1985 has also joined the library, as has 2006’s Spider Riders (this is how I learned Spider Riders was an anime).
But the largest chunk of new material isn’t anime at all. It’s most of the video game cartoons produced by DIC in the 80s and 90s: The Super Mario Bros Super Show (1989), The Legend of Zelda (1989), The Adventures of Super Mario Bros 3 (1990), Super Mario World (1991), Sonic The Hedgehog SatAM (1993) and Sonic Underground (1999). Kind of an unexpected acquirement, and it’s not even everything: Sonic’s other 1993 cartoon, the weekday version, isn’t there. Neither are any of the seasons of Captain N, including what would’ve made the other half of Super Mario World.
Kind of unexplainable, but…most of it is there, so you can annoy people with “Excuuuuuuuse Me Princess” replays wherever you go, and watch Peach meet Milli Vanilli as many times as you want (with ads). Full details are below.
