Sega May Be Considering A Sonic the Hedgehog Theme Park

If you can remember far back enough, you can recall the days when Nintendo and Sega were rivals and one always had to keep pace with the other. Things aren’t that way anymore, but now that Nintendo has their own theme park within Universal Studios, that may have lit a bit of jealousy at the House of Sonic.

Roberta Perry, president of the business development company Roberta Perry & Associates, was the recent subject of an interview with Attractions Magazine. It was during this interview she let slip that she’s been developing ideas with Sega for a possible theme park of their own. “This is the first time they’ve been in the location-based entertainment marketplace in the United States,” Perry said. As for what kind of attractions Sega would put in such a park, well, duh. “Lots of Sonic the Hedgehog,” she mentioned.

Like Super Nintendo World, Super Sega World (or whatever they decide to call it) would be built in multiple locations aronnd the world. “We’re developing projects here, as well as in Europe, Japan, and South America. I’ve only been as far south as Columbia, and I’ll get to go further into South America, so I’m looking forward to that.” Perry has the past experience to make it happen: she was actually one of the people who worked on Super Nintendo World, as well as the How to Train Your Dragon: The Isle of Berk attraction.

Keep in mind, though, these are just talks and Sega has not formally announced a theme park. Nothing could come of this, and then again, something could. Perhaps we’ll ride the quills of a Sonic-shaped rollercoaster sometime next decade.

I grew up playing Sonic games on the Genesis, so hearing about a possible Sonic theme park is very exciting to me. But I think Sega has to be very careful here. It’s not just about putting Sonic statues and blue paint everywhere. They need to think of how to turn Sonic’s fast gameplay into real experiences. Can they design rides that feel fast but are still safe? Also, Sega has other IPs too like Yakuza, Jet Set Radio, and Virtua Fighter. I hope they won’t focus only on Sonic. Nintendo made a strong plan with interactive attractions, mobile apps, and consistent branding. If Sega wants to compete with that, they need more than just nostalgia. It has to be fun and surprising for both kids and adults. If this works, it could help Sega become more relevant again, beyond just video games. I really want to believe they can pull it off.

I’d totally go if they make it real. I’m not a superfan, but I think a Sonic roller coaster sounds fun. The spinning and loops could match his gameplay. Plus, the kids would love it.

As someone who’s visited both Disney and Universal parks, I’m always interested in new theme park projects. I think Sonic has a lot of potential for ride design. Imagine a 4D ride where you chase after Dr. Eggman through loops and tunnels. That could be fun. But to succeed, Sega must focus on the full experience: music, food, merchandise, staff training. People come for the rides but remember the little details. If they really are planning to build in multiple countries, they also need to adjust for local cultures. It’s good that Roberta Perry is involved because she has actual experience in big attractions.

I don’t think Sega can manage this. Nintendo has Mario, which is more popular with families. Sonic is known, but not everyone connects with the brand anymore. His games are very hit or miss these days. A theme park based on Sonic could end up being empty after the first year if it’s not done right. I think they should fix their gaming reputation first.

This seems like a smart move. Location-based entertainment is a growing market, and Sega has a character with international recognition. The key challenge will be IP strength. Unlike Nintendo, Sega doesn’t have multiple popular characters. So I would recommend including cross-media content: maybe a VR experience, an anime theater, or AR scavenger hunts. It can’t rely on Sonic alone. Also, success will depend heavily on the location, partnerships, and long-term planning. If they move too fast, it will collapse. If they take their time, this could work.

If Sega really builds a theme park, I hope they give some love to their older games. I’d love to walk through a Streets of Rage zone or visit a virtual Shenmue city. Sonic is great, but Sega’s history is deep and rich. Maybe an arcade section filled with old cabinets? That would be amazing.

This sounds cool, but I wonder how expensive it’ll be. Theme parks are already very pricey, especially if you’re traveling with a group or family. I hope Sega makes it affordable or at least offers package deals. If the park is only for rich tourists, then it’s missing the point.

I’m already imagining what the rides could be like. A Green Hill Zone ride where the seats move like you’re jumping over loops, or maybe a Chaos Emerald treasure hunt. There could even be a Chao Garden play area for younger kids. Sega has such colorful worldsβ€”it could be beautiful in real life if they stay true to the art style.

I’m happy to see they are considering South America too. A lot of big entertainment projects only focus on North America and Japan. Fans in other countries deserve the same experiences. It’s also smart for businessβ€”Sonic has global appeal. If Sega wants this to succeed, they should work with local designers to make each park feel unique and connected to the region.
