Backrooms Renate 960x640

Here’s When ‘Backrooms’ Finally Becomes Streamable

Backrooms, the feature film based on the viral videos of eerie liminal spaces, was an undeniable success for A24, becoming their highest-grossing hit ever and one of the sensations of the summer. Naturally, the studio was going to wait longer than usual to abandon the lucrative theater sales…but the delay is almost over, as HBO Max confirms they will get the movie September 25, as part of their exclusive deal with A24.

We were skeptical something that gives the shivers in small doses could be effectively expanded into something that lasts over 90 minutes on a large screen. But young director Kane Parsons managed to pull it off (at least, I assume he pulled it off…I haven’t seen it and I’m going off other people’s reviews here).

Chiwetel Ejiofor stars in Backrooms as Clark, a bored furniture salesman who discovers an invisible portal exists through the wall that can take him to a distorted version of the storage rooms in the building. These halls seem to go on forever, the flourescent lights buzz constantly, and boy is everything yellow. As Clark explores further, and encourages others to do the same, the Backrooms grow more distorted in appearance and, eventually, more dangerous. But it wouldn’t be an effective horror movie if people knew to turn around and leave.

Backrooms also stars Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell. Parsons says he’s currently trying to hammer out a sequel. Your trip to liminal space comes home September 25 on HBO Max.

It's wild to see A24 hitting such heights with Backrooms. The blend of horror and that uncanny, everyday eeriness really taps into something primal. I love the idea of a film capturing those liminal spaces; it's like stepping into the uncanny valley visually. It makes you think about how those viral sensations can translate to bigger narratives on the screen.

I'm curious, though, do you think it'll capitalize on that social media vibe, or go for a more traditional horror narrative? I feel like it could go either way, and I'm hopeful for something that pushes boundaries.

I remember watching the original backrooms videos late at night and feeling actual fear from something so simple. Turning that into a full movie sounds hard but if Kane Parsons pulled it off then respect to him. September 25 is close now so I am marking my calendar. Chiwetel Ejiofor is a serious actor so having him in a horror movie about yellow hallways is an interesting choice. I hope the pacing is good because 90 minutes of the same environment could get boring if not done right. Still excited to watch this at home instead of paying for theater tickets again.

This is good news for people like me who missed it in theaters. HBO Max getting it fast is nice for once.

I am a bit confused how a concept about empty rooms can be scary for that long. The videos worked because they were short and left you wondering. A full movie might explain too much and kill the mystery. But I trust A24 usually picks good directors so maybe this will surprise me. The cast list is solid too, Mark Duplass always brings something interesting to weird projects like this. I will wait for reviews from normal viewers before deciding, critics sometimes love things regular people find boring.

Finally something worth putting on my watchlist. September cannot come fast enough for me.

Honestly the writer of this article admits he has not even watched it yet which makes the whole review feel empty to me. How can we trust this take if he is just repeating other opinions. I want real details, not guesses. Still, the release date news is useful information at least.

The lighting design people are talking about seems like the real star here, endless yellow hallways with buzzing lights sounds unsettling just from the description. I am curious how they made a fixed setting feel like it keeps changing without repeating itself visually. That takes real production skill, not just writing.

I remember the internet backrooms trend a few years ago and never thought it would become a real movie with actors this famous. Feels random but also kind of amazing that internet culture turned into cinema.

Something about liminal spaces genuinely disturbs people on a psychological level, the idea of being somewhere that looks normal but feels wrong. If the movie captures that feeling properly instead of relying on jump scares, it could actually be memorable. Too many horror films forget subtlety these days and just throw loud noises at the audience instead of building dread slowly like the original videos did.
