The Latest Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Trailer Is Full Of Weapons

Square Enix let loose a new Final Fantasy 7 Revelation trailer during Gamescom today. This time, the focus is on something we already knew was part of the game, but it’s still nice to see close-up: the Weapons. On the planet of Gaia “weapons” are gigantic monsters the planet calls forth whenever it feels threatened, by meteor or man. At the moment Gaia is threatened by both.

In the original 1997 game, only one Weapon, Ultima, was mandatory to fight. Ruby and Emerald Weapon were optional, but they were the hardest bosses in the game. Once Meteor was summoned you could find them on the world map and fight them at any time, but they were guaranteed to hand you your lunch unless you were VERY powered up. I tried for months to beat Ruby and Emerald; I tried every trick GameFAQS suggested. Nothing worked. They still remain my white whales.

No boss so far in the FFVII remake series has been nearly as challenging, so I’m not expecting the same level of punishment from the Weapons this time….and if it happens, there’s an Easy Mode that didn’t exist in the 90s (when it was “Git Gud” or nothing).

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will introduce Vincent and Cid as playable party members. We haven’t gotten a trailer focused on Cid yet, but Vincent can turn himself into a monster and slash at enemies ferociously. Cid, at least, will let you fly his giant airship, the Highwind, opening up the entire world.

Unlike the previous two releases, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will not be a Playstation 5 timed exclusive. From Day One, Square promises, you will be able to play it on.Switch 2, PS5, PC and XBox. The game is currently targeted for a Spring 2027 release.

The focus on weapons in the Final Fantasy 7 Revelation trailer is intriguing, especially considering how iconic some of them are in the narrative and gameplay. Weapons in the original game often carried significant lore and character connections, like the Ultima Weapon and the Apocalyptic weapon modifications. I find it fascinating how they can impact gameplay mechanics and storytelling.

Have any specific weapons or weapon systems from previous titles influenced your playstyle? The Materia system in the original really gave each weapon a unique flavor, and it'll be interesting to see if they explore that depth again.
