SUMMARY: A former psychiatrist turned housewife hires a brilliant but secretive “surrogate mother” tutor, unaware that the woman is investigating her missing sister. The young daughter of the psychiatrist had been kidnapped and killed. Is there a connection?
To clearly understand and follow the storyline of “Secret Mother”, you should have a little knowledge about Daechi-dong.
The story begins with a murder or …??? Murder? Suicide? Accidental death? Uuhh … it’s a long story. “Do you have time, Mr. Generic Police Detective?’ said the likely suspect. ‘This could take a while.’ The detective indicated: ‘I’m all ears. I’m already AT WORK.’
Ha Jung-Wan is the primary investigator, i.e., Mr. Generic Police Detective. At an elementary school’s 40th anniversary charity party, a woman suddenly falls from a building into the swimming pool, and blood spreads through the water. The woman the detective is interrogating, who is the likely suspect, is Kim Eun-Young. Why is she the likely suspect? Because when everybody looked up, she was standing on the balcony looking down. The immediate obvious reaction is: Did she push the woman, did the woman commit suicide, or was it an accidental death? Kim Eun-Young, aka Lisa Kim, proceeds to tell Ha Jung-Wan her story.
Kim Yoon-Jin, a former psychiatrist, has given up her career to focus on her family after the tragic death of her young daughter. The loss haunts her; she carries a crushing sense of guilt and channels that unresolved grief into an almost desperate determination to secure the perfect future for her young son. On the surface, she has it all. A successful husband, Han Jae-Yeol, who is a high-ranking law enforcement official. Plus, a comfortable life in Daechi-dong, an elite community in the heart of Gangnam, one of Seoul’s wealthiest districts. However, there are cracks in her marriage and her memory of the night her daughter disappeared, which never closed. Nevertheless, she still has a son to raise, so she must carry on.
To boost her son’s academic prospects, the women in the Daechi-dong circle convince Kim Yoon-Jin to hire a highly sought-after “surrogate mother”–style tutor, Lisa Kim. The mysterious education consultant moves into the home and manages every aspect of a child’s study and schedule. Lisa is brilliant, disciplined, and unafraid to confront the toxic competitiveness of the Daechi-dong mothers. But she also has a hidden agenda.
Lisa is actually Kim Eun-Young, a woman whose own younger sister vanished years earlier under circumstances that may be connected to Kim Yoon-Jin’s family. She creates a new identity and presents her polished resume, which looked so authentic that she had no problem landing the job. Once Kim Eun-Young gains access to the house, she quietly and secretly investigates two incidents. (1) The disappearance of Kim Yoon-Jin’s daughter and (2) the disappearance of her sister. The two disappearances may be connected.
Kim Yoon-Jin is initially suspicious of Lisa Kim’s unconventional methods and blunt honesty, unaware that she is searching for her missing sister. As time passes, Kim Yoon-Jin slowly begins to rely on Lisa Kim. Their relationship evolves into a fragile alliance between two women bound by grief. Clues surface after examinations of security footage and buried police reports. There are inconsistencies in alibis, systemic negligence, and adult selfishness.
Kim Yoon-Jin suspects that her husband and others around her may have concealed the truth about her daughter’s death. The more Kim Eun-Young uncovers, the clearer it becomes that the community has collectively chosen denial over truth. They choose to present curated images of perfect families and parents with happy marriages and successful careers. Whoever is hiding the truth is willing to silence Kim Eun-Young, i.e, Lisa Kim, before she exposes everything. But both Kim Yoon-Jin and Kim Yoon-Jin remain determined. The intertwined tragic mysteries of the two missing girls must be unraveled.
