SDCC 2017: Shazam Film Gets Director, Talks About Film
Shazam is a complicated member of the DC Comics universe. At one time, his comics sold more than Batman and Superman. Then, he got sued for being “too much like Superman”, and they won, which forced the then Captain Marvel into obscurity, and has struggled to get back into the limelight ever since. Despite that, he has an almost cult following, and so when a movie for Shazam was revealed to be in the DCEU lineup, many were excited.
But, the thrills soon became headscratchers when things would seemingly progress, and then suddenly not. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is set to be Black Adam, Shazam’s greatest foe. Yet, Billy Batson and Shazam have not been cast themselves. And now, it appears as though Black Adam won’t be in the Shazam film.
Thankfully, some good news was had in that David F. Sandberg is attached to the film. And he spoke at San Diego Comic Con to IGN about joining the film and what it’s like. Including how he’s doing another film with a young protagonist:
“Yeah, just because it’s like the ultimate wish fulfillment, you know? Every kid wants to be Superman, and here’s a kid who gets the chance to be Superman, and you know, finds out that could also be a challenge.”
He also notes that Shazam is apparently the next film to go into production, which means we’ll likely be getting more news on it soon.
