Project Hail Mary

Project Hail Mary Comes To Blu-Ray August 11…And October 13

Earlier this month Amazon announced Project Hail Mary, the new hit movie from MGM (a studio they own), would finally hit streaming on…MGM+, a service no one has. We suggested then that people buy the Blu-Ray release instead. Only problem with that was, it didn’t exist yet.

Soon it will. MGM has announced a street date for the Project Hail Mary Blu-Ray, 4K UHD and DVD, as well as what will be in it. Each format will include the same bonus features: five deleted scenes, commentary by directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and a featurette, “Earth’s Favorite Eridian.” The street date is August 11.

And if you want more, then wait until October 13, when the limited edition Steelbook version sees release. It will be three discs, with additional features on the bonus disc that haven’t been revealed yet. There will also be a collectible booklet inside and other goodies.

Project Hail Mary is about a middle school science teacher who gets caught up in a quest to stop the sun from dying by venturing into deep space and unlocking the secret of why a particular star is resistant to a galaxy-wide star-eating plague. Once at the star, he encounters an alien on the same mission, and the two learn to work together to solve the mystery and save both their worlds.

Amazon currently offers this set for a bit of an inflated price: $27.96 for the regular version and $49.99 for the collector’s version. But all things come to those who wait, and they have a tendency to lower the price in a short period of time.

I'm really excited about Project Hail Mary! I loved the book, so I'm hoping the adaptation does it justice. The announcement about the Blu-Ray release on August 11 feels like a bit of a double-edged sword, though. It's awesome that we'll finally get to see it outside of MGM+, but I'm curious how well it will translate to the screen. What are your thoughts on the casting? I've seen some mixed reactions, especially regarding the lead. Do you think they'll be able to capture the depth of the story?

I'm glad they're giving this a physical release because I still like owning movies I really enjoy. Streaming services keep moving things around, and sometimes you need another subscription just to watch one film. A Blu-ray is something I can keep without worrying about where it ends up next year. The Steelbook also sounds interesting, but I'm going to wait and see what the extra bonus disc actually includes before spending that much money. If the extra features are worth it and the price drops a little, I'll probably go with that version instead.

I actually like that they're releasing both versions instead of making everything exclusive to the expensive edition. Some collectors want the Steelbook, while other people just want the movie with the basic bonus features. That feels like a fair approach. I'm curious about the deleted scenes because sometimes they explain ideas that didn't make it into the final cut. Even if they're not essential, they're still fun to watch after you've already seen the movie.
