Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind Looks Wild

Summer Games Fest will bring a lot of unexpected announcements this weekend, and we’re kicking it off with the surprise return of beat-em-up games starring the Power Rangers. These were once ubiquitous in the 90s, less so today…but AI-YI-YI-YI-YI, now they’re back! Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind is currently being developed by Digital Eclipse for a release later this year.

Rita’s Rewind is an adventure styled exactly like something we would’ve gotten in 1994, full of 16-bit action, chunky pixels and Mode 7 scaling tricks. The situation our attitudinous teenagers are dealing with this week is that Rita’s found a way to travel through time. In fact there are TWO Ritas now — Robo Rita has warped from the future to show Original Flavor Rita how to pull the trick off. Now they’re both jetting through history, trying to change events to their favor, while the Rangers run behind, trying to stop them and save the flow of time.

Rita’s never been the brightest bulb, but if I were her, the first thing I’d do is go back 10,000 years and stop myself from being imprisoned in a can on the Moon. Think about everything she could change from that far back — the Rangers might not even exist. That’s not our Rita, though — none of the stages shown suggest she’ll be so bold. The game supports co-op play for up to five at once, both online and offline.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind will be available for consoles and PC later this year.

That sounds like a cool game! I agree about going back in time 10,000 years and preventing her imprisonment. My question was, later on, why didn't Lord Zedd get her out of the dumpster during those 10,000 years? Or, why didn't she call for help from Master Vile during that time? The obvious answer for the show is the story hadn't added those characters in yet at the time, and casual fans will accept that. But if you really thing about it, those are some interesting questions. In any case, I'm looking forward to the game. Anything Power Rangers with Rita Repulsa (or Lord Zedd) in it is always very interesting and fun!

OMG! A new Power Rangers beat-'em-up?! This totally throws me back to those epic afternoons after school, mashing buttons and yelling "It's Morphin' Time!" with my friends. Pixelated graphics and side-scrolling action? Sign me up! Two Ritas? Robo-Rita sounds awesome! Can't wait to team up with my buddies and bash through waves of Putty Patrollers.

Interesting twist on the time travel trope! Rita messing with the past is a fun idea, but wouldn't going back further make more sense? Like, stopping her imprisonment altogether? Still, the concept has potential. Wonder if they'll reference any historical events in the game. Maybe we'll see the Rangers fight alongside dinosaurs or something crazy! This could be a cool way to blend classic Power Rangers action with a bit of education.

Seeing Rita Repulsa back in action with this Rita's Rewind news is a trip! It instantly brings back memories of watching Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Machiko Soga's performance as Rita was legendary – her expressions and physicality really brought the character to life. Wish she could be here to see Rita's return to video games. Maybe Rita's Rewind can be a kind of tribute, a way to celebrate the villain she made so memorable. It would be awesome if there was some kind of in-game reference to Machiko, a small detail for longtime fans to appreciate

That would be cool. Also, Carla Perez, since she was actually Rita a lot longer than Machiko. But there's always something about the original.

That makes sense. They said that Finster's special moon rub made Rita look younger when Carla Perez started playing the character. But it's harder to explain gaining weight.
