Summer Games Fest will bring a lot of unexpected announcements this weekend, and we’re kicking it off with the surprise return of beat-em-up games starring the Power Rangers. These were once ubiquitous in the 90s, less so today…but AI-YI-YI-YI-YI, now they’re back! Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind is currently being developed by Digital Eclipse for a release later this year.
Rita’s Rewind is an adventure styled exactly like something we would’ve gotten in 1994, full of 16-bit action, chunky pixels and Mode 7 scaling tricks. The situation our attitudinous teenagers are dealing with this week is that Rita’s found a way to travel through time. In fact there are TWO Ritas now — Robo Rita has warped from the future to show Original Flavor Rita how to pull the trick off. Now they’re both jetting through history, trying to change events to their favor, while the Rangers run behind, trying to stop them and save the flow of time.
Rita’s never been the brightest bulb, but if I were her, the first thing I’d do is go back 10,000 years and stop myself from being imprisoned in a can on the Moon. Think about everything she could change from that far back — the Rangers might not even exist. That’s not our Rita, though — none of the stages shown suggest she’ll be so bold. The game supports co-op play for up to five at once, both online and offline.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind will be available for consoles and PC later this year.
