I’ve noticed Pokemon seems to be the only major franchise that still puts out games at the same pace it did 20 years ago. It took six years to get another Zelda, and the last time Rockstar put out a GTA game dinosaurs roamed the earth, but Pokemon still reliably pushes out another mainline title every two years or so, like it’s 2002 or something. Pokemon is also receiving constant complaints lately about halfhearted graphics and glitches. And as I suspected, the two are related.
New quotes from The Pokémon Company COO Takato Utsunomiya seems to hint the reason Scarlet and Violet turned out so half-baked was because the games were rushed. “I think in general, if you look at the past, the path we’ve taken up until now has been this constant release, always regularly releasing products on a fairly fixed kind of a cadence, you might say,” Utsunomiya told Comicbook.com.
“Always having these products able to be introduced and new experiences for our customers, and that’s how we’ve operated up until now. I think we’re still operating in that way, but there’s more and more conversations, as the development environments change, about how we can continue to do this, while making sure that we’re ensuring really quality products are also being introduced.”
Quality has become the problem. You don’t have to look far to find videos of the numerous bugs in Scarlet and Violet, and a lot of players feel Game Freak does not put enough of an effort into game graphics. But crafting more refined, modern graphics would mean a longer development cycle, and consequently, fewer Pokemon games.
It’s the old business saying, “You can have fast, cheap or good, but never all three at once.” If you make something fast and cheap, it’s probably not going to be good. Which would you sacrifice for a better Pokemon: the speed they come out or the price?
