Pixar is one of the most beloved movie studios of all time. Mainly because of their ability to craft stories that resound with children and adults alike. To this day, they have had a near perfect record when it comes to box office hits. This is compounded by the recent release Finding Dory, which has not only broken box office records for animation films, but also, has been the #1 movie three weeks in a row.
In the upcoming known slate of Pixar films, there are three sequels planned. One for Toy Story, Cars, and the long desired Incredibles sequels. However, according to Pixar President Jim Morrison in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, after that, they’ll be going back to solo original films:
“Everything after Toy Story and The Incredibles is an original right now.”
He notes that while there is potential for sequel to films like Ratatouille, Wall-E and more, they want to focus on new content. Also, sequels are hard to make in some cases as the originals are so beloved:
“Most studios jump on doing a sequel as soon as they have a successful film, but our business model is a filmmaker model, and we don’t make a sequel unless the director of the original film has an idea that they like and are willing to go forward on,” Morris explains. “A sequel in some regards is even harder [than the original] because you’ve got this defined world which, on the one hand, is a leg up, and on the other hand has expectations that you can’t disappoint on.”
The next Pixar film is Cars 3, scheduled for June next year.
