Phantom School

Phantom School ~ 2022 Fantasy Web Drama on Viki

“Phantom School” is a Korean drama series, released in 2022, has 8 episodes, and is categorized as Web Drama, Youth or High School, Supernatural, or Fantasy.

♦ What is a Phantom and How Did They Get in the Human World?

In “Phantom School”, evil beings that feed on human desires are called phantoms. These supernatural beings are captured by phantom hunters, then sealed in beads, and kept in an underground depository.

But “someone” broke into the depository and stole 7 beads. They don’t know who did it or why, but they do know that whoever it was, they took the beads into the human world. ALL phantom hunters decided to take action since this act was unprecedented. Someone needs to go into the human world.

Kang Yu Na is a “trainee”, i.e. she is not a full-fledged phantom hunter, but she has been assigned the mission. This will be her first mission. She must prevent a phantom from attaching itself to a human. She enters the human world disguised as a high school student at Seonghon High School.

Wait! This is a huge mission! Why was a trainee sent? Yu Na might think she’s on her own, however, Choi Gi Wu, a Master Hunter, keeps a watchful eye on her. Also, she meets another high schooler who becomes a really good helper.

Main Characters:

  • Kang Yu Na (played by Lim So Eun aka NC.A)
  • Lee Do Gyeom (played by Choi Seok Won aka Tan, “Ghost Doctor”)
  • Sung So Jin (played by Kim Seo-yeon, “Tomorrow”)
  • Choi Gi Wu (played by Lim Sung-kyun, “The Escape of the Seven”)
  • Han Su Yeong (played by Cha Jae-hoon)

Where to Watch

Viewership and Rating:

My personal rating is 7 out of 10 stars.

Here are a few lines lifted from various reviews (links below):

  • “… feels vastly incomplete, like it was cobbled together and thrown to the wolves of the universe.” Per Bookwyrming Thoughts
  • “… a fantasy action exorcism genre that tells the story of phantoms who try to throw the human world into chaos by manipulating students consumed by their desires, and hunters who try to destroy such phantoms and protect world peace.” Per Urban Asian

Protect world peace??? Uh-huh. OK! If I were rating “Phantom School” based on kid-friendly cheesiness, it would be 10 out of 10 stars. Eh! They were high schoolers who did their best to save other high schoolers who had been possessed by evil spirits. That’s better than high schoolers bullying other high schoolers like in “The Glory”; or high schoolers drafted for military service to fight aliens, “Duty After School”.

I think "Phantom School" sounds like an exciting journey into the mysterious realm! The notion of phantoms infiltrating the human realm, as well as the intrigue of determining who got into the vault, has me captivated already. I'm particularly captivated by Kang Yu Na's experience as a novice hunter thrown into this high-risk operation. The sense of mystery behind Choi Gi Wu's careful monitoring provides an extra depth of suspense. Count me in on this fascinating excursion!

Ah, "Phantom School," what a nostalgic trip down memory lane! The premise of battling supernatural entities within the confines of a high school setting was executed with flair. Lim Sung-kyun's portrayal of Choi Gi Wu was a standout for me, bringing gravitas to the role of the seasoned phantom hunter. While the series did have its moments of cheesiness, it's forgivable considering the target audience.

"Phantom School" was a mixed bag for me. While the concept of battling phantoms in a high school setting was intriguing, the execution fell short in some aspects. Lim So Eun's performance as Kang Yu Na was a highlight, but the pacing of the storyline left something to be desired. That being said, it still had its moments of excitement and suspense
