About Time ~ Love, Music and a Life Clock Change Everything

“About Time” is a 2018 Korean drama, 16 episodes, categorized as a Fantasy Romance. It is streaming on Viki, Tubi TV, The Roku Channel, and Amazon Prime.

  • Memorable Quote: “Whatever your reason is to be next to me, I don’t care about that reason now.”

SUMMARY: An aspiring musical actress can see the mysterious countdown clocks showing how much time people have left to live, including her own. But she meets a man whose presence mysteriously stops her countdown. She finds a way to stay near him, and it’s fine until she realizes why being next to him stops her clock.

♦ When Every Second Counts

In “About Time”, Choi Michaela, known affectionately as Mi-ka, is a young aspiring musical actress with a supernatural ability. She can see the life-clocks of others, including her own. That means she knows she doesn’t have much time left. In just a few months, she’ll pass away. Since she knows her exact amount of time she has left, she wants to try to accomplish her dream. No point letting death completely control her life. Choi Michaela tries to make every moment count. After all, everyone has a clock, and some have more time than others. That’s life! Choi Michaela auditions every chance she gets, hoping to land a part in a musical production. She works tirelessly toward achieving her dream of becoming a successful musical actress.

Why Doesn’t He Have a Clock?

One day, Choi Michaela encounters Lee Do-Ha, the wealthy and seemingly cold chief director of a cultural foundation. Lee Do-Ha comes from a privileged family and appears to have a carefully controlled “perfect” life. He’s already had his future wife chosen for him, Bae Soo-Bong. His father approves because she comes from a privileged family as well. However, Lee Do-Ha has deep emotional wounds. He is receiving medical treatment for his anxiety, which was caused by his first love’s abrupt abandonment. She ended the relationship without telling him why and disappeared.

Bae Soo-Bong stayed close to Lee Do-Ha’s side to help him mend his broken heart. Of course, all the while she was hoping he would eventually fall in love with her, and they would marry. But her future plans get interrupted when Choi Michaela and Lee Do-Ha cross paths.

Choi Michaela discovers something astonishing about Lee Do-Ha. First, she can’t see his clock. Second, whenever she is near him, the countdown on her life clock behaves differently. If she is near Lee Do-Ha, her remaining time gets extended. She can’t explain it. But then, she can’t explain why she can see people’s clocks. This is just another unexplained mystery. But it’s a good one.

I Have to Be Next to You.  I Need You!

The discovery that her time can be extended draws Choi Michaela toward Lee Do-Ha, initially for reasons that are not entirely romantic. Her determination to remain near Lee Do-Ha leads to an unusual arrangement that brings these two different people into one another’s daily lives. As they spend more time together, their relationship becomes increasingly complicated. The more they learn about each other, the more they grow close to each other, and soon they fall in love. The wounds caused by his first love heal. However, now Choi Michaela has to deal with the jealousy and ire of Bae Su-Bong, Lee Do-Ha’s future wife.

Choi Michaela finally realizes why her time keeps getting extended. It’s because she’s stealing time from Lee Do-Ha. Her time is increasing, and his time begins running out. This isn’t right? How can she rob the man she loves of his allotted time to live?  Is their love meant to be?

Main Characters:

Where to Watch: Viki, Tubi TV, The Roku Channel, and Amazon Prime

Viewership and Rating:

My personal rating is 8.5 out of 10 stars.

At its heart, “About Time” is a fantasy romance about the value of time and the uncertainty of the future. It is also about how love can change the way people understand the precious moments they have been given. The supernatural life-clock concept provides the drama with its distinctive hook.  I was hooked!  I definitely had to figure out what was going to happen at the last second on the clock.  Rather than treating time simply as something measured by clocks and calendars, the K-drama asks the question:

  • What would you do differently if you could actually see how much time you have left?
  • How would you treat others if you knew how much time they had left?

The way "About Time" blends romance with the element of time travel was such a unique approach! I especially loved how the female lead, played by Lee Sung Kyung, navigated her relationships while grappling with her impending fate. The emotional depth of her character really drove home the series' themes of love and mortality, leaving a lasting impact long after the final episode.

There is no time travel in this K-drama. It's the fact that the woman can see how much time everybody has left to live. But she did not time travel. It was the person's remaining lifetime at the present.
