“Overwhelming Generation” is set against the volatile backdrop of 1930s Shanghai and colonial Korea. Shin Jeong Tae is a boy forced to grow into a weapon before he ever gets the chance to be a son or a brother. At fifteen, Shin Jeong Tae watches his father, an independence fighter, gunned down by a Japanese soldier. Instead of being recognized as a victim, Shin Jeong Tae is cruelly framed as the cause of his father’s death, branded by his community and driven into the shadows. From that moment, his fists become his only language. He uses his fists first for survival, and later for justice.
Shin Jeong Tae’s early life struggle is anchored by two key relationships: his sickly younger sister and his childhood friend Kim Ok-Ryeon. A disastrous scam wipes out the money he saved for his sister’s operation. He joins a brutal group and becomes a fighter, but this pulls him away from the gentle life Kim Ok-Ryeon dreams of for him. A tragic misunderstanding leads to his sister’s death. Shin Jeong Tae’s guilt hardens into a resolve that no blow from anyone’s fist can shake.
Parallel to Shin Jeong Tae’s journey is Gaya Deguchi, the daughter of a Japanese man murdered in a tangled web of politics and revenge. Once close to Shin Jeong Tae, Gaya Deguchi’s grief and rage are weaponized by a powerful organization. She is trained in Japan and molded into a ruthless leader whose loyalty is constantly tested. Gaya Deguchi’s rise in the organization places her on the opposite side of Shin Jeong Tae. Their childhood bond becomes a battlefield where love, betrayal, and national allegiance collide. As she takes control of territories, Gaya Deguchi becomes both Shin Jeong Tae’s most dangerous enemy and the person who understands his pain best.
When Shin Jeong Tae travels to Shanghai to confirm his father’s death and confront the forces that destroyed his family, he finds a city carved up by Korean independence fighters, Japanese factions, and Chinese power brokers. He meets people who revered his father and urged him to continue his father’s mission. Shin Jeong Tae gradually transforms from a thuggish street fighter into a fearless heroic leader who can unite fractured groups and stand against powerful and rival organizations.
Kim Ok-Ryeon, meanwhile, grows from a supportive childhood friend into a woman who quietly sacrifices her own dreams for Shin Jeong Tae’s safety. Gaya Deguchi’s feelings for Shin Jeong Tae can be described as fiery obsession, but her loyalty lies elsewhere. Kim Ok-Ryeon is his first love. Her feelings are pure love and tenderness, and she is loyal only to him.
Ultimately, Shin Jeong Tae must decide whether his loyalty lies with revenge, love, or the fight for independence.

Found “Overwhelming Generation” (aka “Inspiring Generation”) by going on a treasure hunt searching for K-dramas where Kwak Dong-Yeon (“Vincenzo”, “Love in the Moonlight”) was part of the cast. The K-drama is a historical action melodrama set against a real historical backdrop (1930s Shanghai, Japanese occupation, Korean independence movement).
It’s not often that I find Korean dramas set in Shanghai during the late 1920s/early 1930s that involve the Korean independence fighters. The Shanghai Korean Provisional Government and its 1920s–30s espionage networks are historically rich, but rarely dramatized in Korean television. Academic sources confirm the era’s importance — Korean exiles, espionage, sabotage, and independence cells operating in Shanghai. This information appears mostly in literature and historical studies, not televised dramas. (Too bad, huh?)
The Korean Provisional Government in Shanghai (대한민국 임시정부) was the political, diplomatic, and intelligence nerve center of the Korean independence movement from 1919 to the early 1930s. The invisible freedom fighters operated in a city full of spies, warlords, foreign concessions, and revolutionary networks.
“Overwhelming Generation” (or “Inspiring Generation”) drew upon this Korean history.
One reviewer indicated there was behind-the-scenes drama (such as the head writer being changed mid-series) that likely accounted for “haphazard writing and plot points” (their opinion). My opinion is that the scriptwriters and whoever was in charge of casting did an excellent job! This series is old but gold.
This K-drama seemed like a very ambitious project. My question is: Why don’t they release more Korean movies or TV series about the Korean Provisional Government in Shanghai during this time period? Maybe the series will end up inspiring others to release similar content. But I hope they don’t do AI-generated videos. YUK! (My opinion.)
