Queen of Tears

Queen of Tears is a Really Good Love Story!

Queen of Tears” is a 2024 K-drama series, with 16 episodes, and categorized as Romance, Comedy (Rom-Com) with a little bit of Melodrama.

Can Love Really Conquer All?

In “Queen of Tears”, Baek Hyun-Woo is a young man who sets out to woo Hong Hae-In, a newly hired employee. He is certain she won’t be able to hold on to a job because she is so incompetent and she has a temper. The funny thing is that every time the boss yells at her, he’s the one who gets anxious and scared.

When he was finally able to get a private moment with her, he persuaded her that he would be able to take care of her, if she was unable to get a job. He tried to impress her by telling her how much money he saved and the fact that his family ran a successful business, etc. He assured her that he could take care of her needs if she married him.

She agreed to get married and promised she would never leave him alone. But guess what? Hong Hae-In is a third-generation chaebol heiress who clearly did not need to marry him for his money.

However… I guess when you’re from a wealthy family, “the others” have “expectations” about the people who marry into that family. Baek Hyun-Woo did his best to make adjustments, but within a few years, he and his wife were sleeping in separate bedrooms and barely talking to one another without acrimony.

To be fair, Hong Hae-In’s family had a lot to do with the couple drifting apart. But Hong Hae-In’s arrogant selfish uncaring behavior as a businesswoman also caused clashes. They clashed professionally but the constant “rub” spilled over into their personal lives as well. Baek Hyun-Woo decided that he was going to ask for a divorce. What else could he do?

One day, Hong Hae-In asked, or rather told Baek Hyun-Woo, that he needed to go with her “somewhere”. He was so angry and disgusted, he said he would not go with her ANYWHERE!! That night when he came home, he was going to tell her that he wanted a divorce. She said she had something to tell him; so he told her to go first. What she said to him CHANGED EVERYTHING!!!

Hong Hae-In’s doctor told her she only had 3 months to live. DEATH? DIVORCE? Suddenly, Baek Hyun-Woo’s desire to get a divorce did not seem like a priority. The doctor’s diagnosis and prediction were so unbelievable, that he went with her to the doctor for confirmation. The doctor told him to prepare for the eventuality.

Baek Hyun-Woo is still conflicted about his feelings for his wife.

  • Wasn’t he no longer in love with her?
  • Could he at least pretend to be in love for the next 3 months?
  • His wife had a will and was not going to leave him anything. Maybe he could persuade her to change the will before she died.

♦ And then there’s this guy!!

Some guy that his wife, Hong Hae-In, knew who wanted to marry her. But she didn’t want anything to do with him. She willingly chose to marry Baek Hyun-Woo. But then this guy shows up and it’s obvious what his intentions are. He came back to give it another try! Maybe this time he’ll win her over.

Even though Baek Hyun-Woo still has thoughts of ending the relationship with his wife, he doesn’t like the idea of some other guy hanging around her. There’s something about that guy that’s very suspicious. Baek Hyun-Woo doesn’t dislike his wife enough to let this guy get his arms around her.  Oh no!!

The life lesson in “Queen of Tears” is that sometimes a drastic life-changing event has to happen for a couple to truly know what love is and that their love is worth fighting for, even if you will only have a short time to enjoy your life together.

Main Characters:

  • Baek Hyun-Woo (played by Kim Soo-Hyun, “The Moon Embracing The Sun”)
  • Hong Hae-In (played by Kim Ji-Won, “Arthdal Chronicles”)

Where to Watch

Viewership and Rating:

  • IMDb: 8.4 out of 10 stars
  • My Drama List: 8.6 out of 10 stars

My personal rating is 9 out of 10 stars.

I love this love story! In “Queen of Tears”, Kim Soo-Hyun and Kim Ji-Won made you feel like their characters belonged together! The onscreen chemistry between those two actors made me want to be their cheerleader. I wanted them to stay together no matter what life threw their way.

NOTE: There are some allegations that the scriptwriter committed plagiarism. Eh! I’ll let the entertainment industry work through that. I like this K-drama.

It's essentially a tale of rediscovering love amidst turmoil. Crafting such a script is undoubtedly a bold move, but with talents like Soo Hyun and Ji Won bringing it to life. One of the best ones I watched.

The connection between Kim Ji-Won and Kim Soo-Hyun in "Queen of Tears" is simply captivating. The characters of Hong Hae-In and Baek Hyun-Woo are vividly brought to life by their on-screen chemistry. Kim Soo-Hyun's portrayal of Baek Hyun-Woo in vulnerable moments, particularly when tears well up in his eyes, makes me feel as though my own heart breaks into a million small pieces right alongside his. His unadulterated feeling is deeply poignant and gives the character new dimensions. In the same way, Kim Ji-Won's portrayal of Hong Hae-In is quite compelling. It's hard to stay out of their story because of the real sincerity and genuineness with which she interacts with Kim Soo-Hyun's character. Together, they create a powerful and unforgettable on-screen presence that leaves a lasting impact on the audience. Their chemistry transcends mere acting
