New Video Reveals Cancelled Star Wars Games
A new video by Unseen64 and DIdYouKnowGaming? has revealed that LucasArts cancelled two rather interesting projects several years ago. According to the footage, these included a Star Wars: Rogue Squadron spin-off called Dark Squadron and an unnamed title that would feature Chewbacca as the main protagonist.
The never-before-seen project was asset to be an action-adventure game starring the famous Wookiee. It would tell the story of Chewbacca’s history, explaining where he came from and how he began working with his best friend Han Solo. This would see the player taking control of the warrior as he progressed from an important figure on his home planet of Kashyyk to a bounty hunter before finally ending up as a co-pilot on the Millennium Falcon.
Unfortunately, the game was ultimately cancelled by George Lucas personally. The director balked at the idea of having Chewbacca as the protagonist in any game and leading a story, despite a publishing committee at LucasArts feeling that the project had plenty of potential.
The second cancelled game was a spin-off to the highly acclaimed Rogue Squadron series by Factor 5. The previous installments had all been Nintendo exclusives and this new entry would also make its way to the same GameCube. However, rather than putting players into the Rebel Alliance as they fought against the Empire, this new game would instead focus on the Imperial Forces attempting to wipe out the rebel scum.
The main protagonist in this title would have been Darth Vader, with players able to pilot a variety of imperial ships, such as tie fighters, and call in support and strikes from the likes of AT-AT walkers and Star Destroyers. This project was actually halted after LucasArts decided to fund the Chewbacca focused game instead, leading to Factor 5 working on several different remasterings of the Rogue Squadron series that never saw the light of day either before the company eventually went bankrupt.
