Confession of Murder p1

Confession of Murder (2012) ~ Who is the Real Killer?

“Confession of Murder” is a 2012 Korean movie, categorized as Action and Thriller, streaming on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Tubi TV, and The Roku Channel. It is one of the many K-dramas inspired by the Hwaseong serial murders.

  • Memorable Quote: “I Am the Murderer.” (This is the title of the killer’s book within the film and the catalyst for the entire story.)

SUMMARY: After the statute of limitations expired on a string of brutal murders, a man publishes a bestselling book confessing to the crimes. The public is frenzied, frantic, and furious! The original detective on the case and the victims’ families demand justice. But then, another person emerges claiming to be the real killer.

♦ Of Course, I’m the Killer! I Wrote the Book.

In “Confession of Murder”, Detective Choi Hyung-Goo almost captured a serial killer responsible for ten (10) murders. The killer escaped after a violent confrontation, leaving Choi Hyung-Goo physically and emotionally scarred.

  • Fifteen (15) years later, the statute of limitations expires.  Choi Hyung-Goo now struggles with guilt, alcoholism, and the fact that the case will slip beyond legal reach.
  • Two (2) years after the statute expires, Lee Doo-Suk publishes a bestselling memoir titled “I Am the Murderer”, claiming he committed all ten murders. He publicly apologizes, and the media makes him a celebrity. But Choi Hyung-Goo thinks Lee Doo-Suk is a fraud seeking fame and fortune.

Lee Doo-Suk tours the country, enjoying his fame, claiming that he is seeking forgiveness. However, the families of the victims are plotting revenge. The law says he can walk free, but THEY DISAGREE. They stage an elaborate kidnapping to capture Lee Doo-Suk and force the truth from him. Choi Hyung-Goo pursues them because he needs to know if Lee Doo-Suk is the real killer or just an opportunist exploiting tragedy.

A caller interrupts a televised debate between Lee Doo-Suk and Choi Hyung-Goo, claiming that he is the real murderer. His confession throws the case into chaos, raising doubts about Lee Doo-Suk’s identity and motives. Lee Doo-Suk had never been in prison. The man who calls himself “J” was never caught, never arrested for any other crimes, and never imprisoned either. He called because he knows the police legally cannot punish him anymore. But that doesn’t mean he wants somebody else taking the credit, becoming a celebrity, AND making money for HIS MURDERS! That’s not right!

Main Characters:

Where to Watch: Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Tubi TV, Pluto TV, and The Roku Channel

Viewership and Rating:

  • IMDb: 7 out of 10 stars
  • My Drama List: 8.1 out of 10 stars

My personal rating is 9 out of 10 stars.

“Confession of Murder” (2012) is important to watch because it delves into the statute of limitations. In my humble non-expert non-legal opinion, when it comes to murder, there should NOT be a statute of limitations. As long as the murderer has not been caught, and even if the murderer is in prison for other crimes, they should remain on the “most wanted” list. Based on that belief, the plot for this movie is a must-watch for anyone who agrees with me! LOL.

Per Rotten Tomatoes, “The film is highly praised for its unique plot, inventive, high-octane action scenes, and unexpected, multiple twists.”  OK. Yeah. That too!

A killer who publicly confesses?? I'm sorry but that premise is unhinged in the best way. I love that this one is from 2012 and people still bring it up, the older action thrillers really knew how to commit to an idea. It streaming on basically four platforms at once feels like a sign. Who else has seen it, is the twist as wild as it sounds?

OMG, I’ve been WAITING for Confession of Murder to hit streaming! 🤩 I can't believe we're finally getting it next week! The whole premise is sooo intriguing! I mean, a thriller that twists the whole concept of justice?? YAAAS! 🎬🙌

And can we talk about the leads? Like, are they super hot?! 😍 I just know I’m going to be in a puddle of emotions, crying over plot twists and complex characters! I need therapy after this drama! 😂 I’m ready for all the plot twists and the mind games! Who else is hyped? Let’s chat about what we think the killer’s motive is! 💔🔍

OK. I'll admit it. I do like the male leads. But that's not why I watched the movie! LOL. 😂

The situation in this movie feels very unfair from the start. A killer can just wait and then speak freely because the law cannot touch him anymore. That idea alone is enough to make the story intense. The man who wrote the book comes across as too confident, almost like he enjoys the attention. That makes it hard to believe him fully. The detective feels more grounded, even if he is struggling. His frustration is easy to understand. The moment when another person claims to be the real killer changes everything. It creates doubt and tension at the same time. Nothing feels certain anymore. The families taking action also feels realistic, even if it crosses legal lines. When the system fails, people react. This story shows that clearly without trying to soften it.

The emotional weight in this story is very noticeable. The detective carries guilt for many years, and it shows in how he acts. He does not look like someone who found peace. The families also carry anger that never went away. When the man publishes his book, it feels like he is reopening their wounds. That reaction makes sense. The twist with another person claiming to be the killer adds more pressure to everyone involved. It turns the situation into something unstable. No one can relax or feel certain anymore. That is what keeps the story strong. It focuses on how people deal with unresolved pain instead of just solving a mystery.

The concept of time is very important here. Years pass, but the impact of the crimes does not fade. The law moves on, but the people involved do not. That contrast is very clear. The detective is stuck in the past, and the families are still affected. The man who confesses seems to use time to his advantage. That creates tension. When another person claims to be the real killer, it shows that time did not resolve anything. It only made things more complicated. The story uses that idea well. It shows that some problems do not disappear just because time passes.

I agree. What nonsense! Putting a statute of limitations on a murder? That makes no sense! To me, it's just proof of how inadequate human justice systems are.
