Hard to believe, but has the island nation of Japan been cranking out Naruto cartoons for almost twenty years? Well…BELIEVE IT! (Sorry, it was right there.) There was first the long-running original, then the even longer-running and non-canon Shippuden, and finally the Next Generation adventures of Boruto.
When you stay on for this long, there’s cause to celebrate. Studio Pierrot announced months ago they were working on four “new” episodes of the original series. We put new in quote marks because we’re not sure what we’re getting. They could be brand-new stories, or they could be reanimated versions of classic episodes. What we do know is they were originally meant to premiere next Sunday, September 3, but due to mysterious circumstances, cannot.
Studio Pierrot says the four episodes they’ve been working on will be delayed an indefinite period of time to “improve their quality.” “We sincerely apologize to all the fans who have been looking forward to the broadcast,” a translation of the Japanese text says. “We will do our best to make it a work that meets everyone’s expectations, so we appreciate your understanding.”
Until the episodes are ready, select reruns of Boruto will run in their intended timeslot in Japan. In the meantime, you can watch this long, loooong 20th Anniversary trailer full of clips from the original series. Dattebayo!
