My Sweet Mobster

“My Sweet Mobster” ~ A 2024 Viki Original Series

“My Sweet Mobster” is Korean drama series released in 2024, based on a web novel of the same title, with 12 episodes, and can be categorized as Romance and Comedy (Rom-Com).

♦ Can People Change?

In “My Sweet Mobster”, the moral of the story is made plain from the very first episode. People can change.

Seo Ji-Hwan used to be a gangster or mobster. But he turned his life around. Not only did he change but he helped others. He is the CEO of Thirsty Deer and his employees ex-cons; mostly gang members, who were released from prison. But just because he is willing to give them a second chance, not everyone else is willing. He believed that people can change.

Go Eun-ha is a kids’ content creator and good at her job. The kids love her! That means that companies who want to market their products to kids will ask her to promote or endorse whatever it is they are selling. Go Eun-ha was working at a kids’ festival that had lots of booths set up with different products, etc. She noticed that nobody was approaching one booth and learned that the men at that booth were all ex-cons. One of the men tried to get a customer to try their new mini-sausages made for kids and the customer said he didn’t want his child eating anything from an ex-con. The ex-con lost his temper and before you knew it there was a big brawl.

Go Eun-ha did what she could to stop the fighting not realizing that everything was being recorded. Later, her boss at the company she worked for seized an opportunity to make their company llok good and make the ex-cons look bad. In other words, they uploaded a portion of the video and edited it with the intent of misleading the viewers.  They painted the ex-cons as the bad guys who caused trouble at a kids’ festival. When Go Eun-ha saw it she was upset.  Her boss uploaded the video without her permission and she asked them to delete the video. They ignored her but they didn’t ignore Seo Ji-Hwan. He walked into the company with his lawyer and after threatening to take the court, they agreed to delete the video. But the damage to Thirsty Deer’s reputation had been done.

Seo Ji-Hwan met Go Eun-ha at her company.  He did not allow her to explain or defend herself. He said she did it for the money and did not care who was hurt. Fortunately, Go Eun-ha got her hands on the original unedited video and uploaded it. She left it up to the public to decide which was the truth. When Seo Ji-Hwan realized he had falsely accused her he apologized. Go Eun-ha was not one to hold grudges so she accepted his apology.

But this was not their only encounter. Seo Ji-Hwan and Go Eun-ha crossed paths at a nightclub and also at her part-time jobs. One of the encounters landed him in the hospital. She visited him there to offer her apology. That was when he first started watching her video content and saw how good she was at making children happy.

Meanwhile, Jang Hyeon-woo is now at Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office. He was Go Eun-ha’s childhood friend but they did not keep in touch. He is a prosecutor investigating gang members and their criminal activities and is particularly interested in Seo Ji-Hwan. He knows about his past and doesn’t believe he is now running a legitimate business. Jang Hyeon-woo does not believe people can change. So he approaches his investigations with his mind made up that certain people are already guilty, even though they might not be.

Jang Hyeon-woo has fond memories of Go Eun-ha from their childhood and would like to reconnect with her. Go Eun-ha would like to meet Jang Hyeon-woo again. Her childhood was unhappy because of mobsters who came to their home and terrorized her and her mother. Spending time with Jang Hyeon-woo was a happy moment in her childhood.

Seo Ji-Hwan is attracted to Go Eun-ha and finds himself pursuing her. Go Eun-ha finds herself drawn to Seo Ji-Hwan. The problem is she hates mobsters. She wishes he had not been a mobster. Seo Ji-Hwan wishes that too, but he can’t erase his past.  Will his past stop them from being together? OR Will other people interfere with their relationship and happiness?

Where to Watch

Viewership and Rating:

My personal rating is the same as the Viki viewers.

Why not just take a bottle of Omija Cheong and drink it? That’s how sweet the Kdrama series “My Sweet Mobster” is.

  • The female lead is sweet, cute, charming, and perky and if you look closely you will see her halo glowing.

  • The male lead is goodhearted and kind, brave and strong, so NOT a bad guy, but totally clueless about the opposite sex.

They were made for each other! LOL.

FYI. What is Omija Cheong?

  • “Dried Omija (five flavor berries) are used to make hot or ice tea. Fresh Omija berries are used to make Omija Cheong which is syrup made from sugar and berries – very similar to how Maesil Syrup is made where the berries and sugar are left to ferment for 100 days.” (SOURCE: 5 Flavor Berries (Omija) – Korean Ingredient | Kimchimari)

I appreciate the positive message in "My Sweet Mobster" about people being able to change, but I wonder how realistically this will be portrayed. Seo Ji-Hwan’s redemption and the integration of ex-cons into society are commendable themes, yet in real life, these transitions are fraught with challenges. Go Eun-ha’s immediate forgiveness and budding romance with a former mobster might be too idealistic for some viewers. However, if handled with sensitivity and depth, this show could offer a refreshing take on romance and personal transformation. I’m cautiously optimistic and curious to see how it all plays out.

Hmm, "My Sweet Mobster" sounds interesting, but can a gangster really turn over a new leaf? I'm all for second chances, but the whole ex-con thing makes me hesitant. I'll probably give it a shot though, as long as the romance isn't too cheesy.

Seo Ji-Hwan’s character seems so admirable, and I’m excited to see how he proves himself to everyone. Go Eun-ha’s support and her own struggles make her relatable and endearing. The mix of romance and comedy is perfect for me, and the high ratings are a great sign that it’s a quality show. I can’t wait to see the chemistry between the leads and how their relationship evolves

OMIGOSH! A K-drama with a cute, bubbly heroine and a misunderstood bad boy with a heart of gold? Sign me up! Throw in some hilarious misunderstandings and a dash of danger (because, you know, prosecutor ex-boyfriend!), and this sounds like my perfect recipe for weekend binge-watching. Pass the Omija Cheong, please!

I’m a bit cynical about "My Sweet Mobster." The premise of a reformed mobster running a business with ex-cons feels like a romanticized version of reality. While the story of redemption is appealing, it often glosses over the real difficulties faced by ex-cons in society. Go Eun-ha’s easy forgiveness and instant chemistry with Seo Ji-Hwan might be a bit too convenient for my taste. However, the show’s popularity and high ratings suggest it’s resonating with many viewers. I might give it a try to see if it offers any fresh perspectives, but I’m managing my expectations.

Ugh, another predictable rom-com with a predictable plot? Ex-con with a mysterious past falls for a sunshine girl? Been there, done that. I bet the ending is all sunshine and rainbows too. Give me something with a bit more depth and complexity, please.

This actually sounds like it could be a refreshing twist on the classic enemies-to-lovers trope. I'm intrigued by the exploration of the theme of redemption and the challenges of overcoming one's past. The supporting cast with the ex-cons trying to go straight sounds interesting too. I hope the characters are well-developed and not just one-dimensional cutouts.
