My Country: The New Age | Korean Drama | Only on Netflix

Country: The New Age”, is a Korean drama series that has the audience on the edge of their seats as they eagerly await to discover if Seo Hwi will restore his father’s honor and if he and his childhood friend, Nam Seon-ho, will reunite as true companions.

This series is a must-watch from start to finish. “My Country: The New Age” is a Korean drama released in 2019 and as of February 2023 it is grouped with the movies and TV series labeled as “Only on Netflix” (in USA).

Set during the transitional period between the end of the Goryeo dynasty and the beginning of the Joseon era, “My Country: The New Age” depicts a power struggle among the king, queen, princes, and military leaders to form a new country. But the focus of the story is on Seo Hwi, the son of “the greatest swordsman in Goryeo”.

The father was a loyal servant who used his swordsmanship to defend the people and serve the king. However, he is betrayed and falsely accused of being a traitor.  Despite his loyal service and honorable reputation, he is dishonorably put to death. His young son (Seo Hwi) must now care for himself and his younger sister.  Years later, Seo Hwi becomes a master swordsman just like his father.  However, he too encounters betrayal and injustice.  He believes his childhood friend, Nam Seon-ho has taken part in the betrayal.  But did his best friend really turn his back on him?

Seo Hwi (played by Yang Se-Jong), the son of the swordsman; and Nam Seon-ho (played by Woo Do-hwan), an illegitimate son of a high-ranking military official ~ are two childhood friends who have the bond of their friendship “tested”.

Various events occur in the lives of these two young men. A misunderstanding about “my country” leads to their separation and turns them into enemies.

• Nam Seon-ho wants to be loyal and patriotic and most of all he wants to receive the approval of his father.  For him “my country” is the new country his father says he wants to build.  But must he choose between his father and his best friend?
• Seo Hwi decides that the words “my country” have no meaning or value.  His country is “the country of the abandoned”. There is no reason for him to be loyal to Goryeo, the old country, or to Joseon, the new country. What did the country’s leaders ever do for him or his family? His father’s death was unjust.  He and his sister had to struggle in the cruel world all by themselves. Later on, he was also betrayed and abandoned.

This series is totally binge-worthy.  It is 16 intense episodes you will want to watch from start to finish.

Most viewers gave this series a rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars. I agree.
