Marvel Considering Resurrecting The Original Avengers

Variety published a pretty damaging report today on closed-door discussions at Disney, where the faltering sales and interest of the MCU is starting to concern them. Fan reaction and box office sales just haven’t been the same since after Endgame, and they’re starting to regret putting all their eggs in the superhero basket.

Apparently they’re starting to feel desperate enough to consider making the next Avengers film about the original Avengers, instead of the new team that would rise from the critically panned Multiverse Saga. The only problem with that is, they killed off several of them already. They could resurrect Black Widow and Iron Man though comic book weirdness, sure, but making death cheap and easily reversible in the comics has had a damaging effect, and spreading that to the movies would be a mistake.

The report also states that, contrary to what it seems like, Disney IS, or WAS concerned with all the bad press surrounding actor Jonathan Majors, who plays Kang the Conqueror — unavoidably the centerpiece of the MCU’s biggest conflict for the next few years. They considered rewriting the larger storyline to replace him with Doctor Doom and get the F4 ball rolling sooner than planned….but they apparently have not moved on this and there is word the Season 2 finale of Loki will put Majors’ character even more front and center.

The bigger problem is, the more of these Marvel things I skip, the more of them I’m likely to skip in the future, because they’re all connected. The Marvels comes out later this month, and a portion of it assumes I have watched the entirety of Ms. Marvel on Disney Plus. Ms. Marvel is a great character and I waited eagerly for her show, but after four episodes of embarrassing teeny-boppy airhead stuff, I turned it off halfway, deciding “they didn’t make this show for me.” My odds of paying a ticket are very low.

There are a lot of people like me out there and Disney has an uphill battle if they want to bring interest back to pre-pandemic levels.

Well, it's a bit of a mixed bag, ain't it? I mean, Disney's gotta be sweating when their cash cow, the MCU, ain't as hot as it used to be. But bringing back the OG Avengers? That's a risky move, and I'm not sure how I feel about it. Sure, I miss Iron Man and Black Widow, but death's gotta mean something in these movies. The comic book weirdness, as they say, can mess things up. On the other hand, the deal with Jonathan Majors and Kang the Conqueror is interesting. It's a tricky situation - do they stick with it or go for Doctor Doom and the Fantastic Four?As for these new Marvel shows and movies, I get where you're coming from. I was excited for Ms. Marvel too, but it felt like they were aiming for a younger audience, which ain't my thing either. The whole interconnected Marvel universe makes it tough; you miss one, you might feel lost in the next. Disney's got their work cut out for 'em if they wanna win folks back.

Resurrecting the original Avengers could be cool for nostalgia, but it does mess with the stakes in the movies. I mean, death should have some weight, right? And, I get why some folks are losing interest; these new characters and storylines don't always hit the mark.
