More shonen these days are mixing in elements of romantic or familial love with their action, and finding success. Joumyaku and Mizuki Yoda’s MarriageToxin is one example, a Shonen Jump+ series that began its run in 2022 and leaped to anime adaption stardom earlier this year. The first season has been a big success for Shueisha, who have formally announced a second season is now in production for next year.
“MarriageToxin is getting a second anime season! When I first heard, I was floored — ‘Are you serious!?’ I’m beyond grateful…” Joumyaku said in a statement. “No amount of thanks could ever be enough, but this is all thanks to everyone who has cheered us on. I’m hella grateful (hella grateful…)!!” We think he’s grateful.
“Thank you so much for green-lighting Season 2!” artist Mizuki Yoda added. “It’s all thanks to everyone who has always supported us. I absolutely love the Season 1 opening and ending and have had them on repeat — so the thought that we get new ones for Season 2 too…! has me incredibly excited already. Season 2 brings on more and more of my favorite characters, so I’d be thrilled if you looked forward to it!“
In MarriageToxin, Hikaru Gero belongs to the “Poison Master” Gero family, which means he’s a top-class assassin. And the big problem with that is, his job has kept him so busy from the moment he grew of age that he’s never entered the dating world. The Gero family must produce an heir, and Hikaru’s relatives are tired of waiting. If he doesn’t land a bride soon, his lesbian sister will be forced to produce the heir instead. Nearly out of time, Hikau needs to get over his lack of experience and find a bride quickly. But who can teach him how?
There is one person who believes they can help with Hikaru’s dilemma: Mei Konosaki. A chance encounter with the man leads Mei to believe they can get him the love life he lacks. Mei is a self-proclaimed “marriage swindler” who claims they can seduce anyone, male or female, in just thirty seconds.
Throughout Season One, Mei and Hikaru work together to take the assassin’s first awkward steps into the dating world. He has no problems with attracting mates, but it’s the dates that follow where things tend to go massively wrong for him. At least he has another season of chances at this. “In Season 2, charming and wildly unpredictable new characters join the mix and run rampant every which way — so please look forward to it!” says Joumyaku.
MarriageToxin is now streaming on Crunchyroll, while the manga it’s based on is available on Shueisha’s Manga Plus app.
