Luxembourg returns to Eurovision
Luxembourg is a legendary country in the Eurovision song contest that hasn’t participated for a long time. They only competed in the song contest from 1956 up to 1993. After they stopped sending entries to the song competition. Despite being a country that doesn’t compete anymore, It has a legendary status. It won the contest five times in its early days. The reason it stopped competing is the lack of funding.
Luxembourg is a rich country but Its Broadcasting station that sends entry to Eurovision is not that profitable. It is a micronation with a population of 652,000. It also doesn’t have a large population diaspora outside the country to help it gain public votes.
Luxembourg’s song L’amour est bleu was only 4th place in Eurovision 1967 but it is one of the most successful Eurovisions ever.
It Charted in the US and even got English version
For its 38 years of Participation in Eurovision , Luxembourg managed to win 5 times. Here is a retro perspective of it’s participation history.
Winning is going to be harder for Luxembourg in modern-day Eurovision because we now have semi-finals due to the increased number of countries competing on the show. Being a Micronation is not always a disadvantage because Latvia won Eurovision before. San Marino managed to qualify in Grand Finals 3 times on its ongoing 12-year run.
It has been 30 years since the last time Luxembourg participated. Now it is returning on Eurovision.
Luxembourg return announcement
Australia is only competing for 8 years but it only failed to qualify in the grand finals once. It also has one runner-up, Being a fresh face made people interested in it. Though Luxembourg is a Eurovision veteran, Being absent for 30 years might make people curious about it. If they make catchy songs as Australia did, Luxembourg could have a successful return.
Russia and Belarus are banned from Eurovision because of the war. Turkey stopped competing and these countries can qualify to the finals and even win. (Well Belarus never won). The absence of these countries could give space to Luxembourg. We will see the return of this rich micronation this coming 2024!
