It Sounds Like Gorilla Grodd Has Taken Over The ‘DC Crime’ Show

Warner Bros has all sorts of DC Gunniverse projects in development, at least for now. One of the wilder ones is DC Crime, a “true crime” documentary series staged in the style of a crime doc, but following the career of a fake character (in this case Gorilla Grodd). Jimmy Olsen was announced as the show’s central character because he was hosting the thing. But there are reports now the show has changed…and Grodd is commanding more of the screen.

Last weekend at the Supergirl premiere in Rio de Janeiro, DC Studios chief honcho Peter Safran mentioned to a member of the press that “the Gorilla Grodd show starts shooting this year…Big news, by the way, I probably shouldn’t have said that.” But he did and now we know. There’s a high chance plans have changed, Jimmy is fired and it’s all Grodd’s show now.

Safran was asked about a new Justice League movie, but said there are no current plans for such a thing. “”We know eventually [we’ll] head in that direction, but we really are just talking about those projects we’ve announced: Supergirl, Lanterns for HBO, Clayface this fall, Man of Tomorrow, The Batman Part 2, [and] we’re gonna do Brave and the Bold introducing Batman into the DCU.” This is your reminder that The Batman Part II uses a different Batman.

As far as we know, Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda are still head writers, producers and showrunners of the Gorilla Grodd project, whatever it winds up being called. Shooting and ape rendering starts later this year.

That sounds intriguing! A true crime documentary series set in the DC universe could bring a unique twist to the genre. I'm curious to see how they incorporate actual DC characters like Gorilla Grodd into a format typically reserved for real-life events. It'll be interesting to see if this approach could attract both comic book fans and true crime enthusiasts.

The idea of a "true crime" series set in the DC universe is wild, and I can't help but chuckle at the thought of Gorilla Grodd being involved. It's such an unexpected twist on the genre. I'm curious how they'll balance the serious tone of true crime with the more outrageous elements of the DC world.

This reminds me a bit of how they approached the humor in shows like Peacemaker, where they mixed serious themes with over-the-top characters. Anyone else wondering how they'll pull that off? I'm definitely intrigued enough to check it out when it eventually drops!

I actually think making Grodd the main focus is the better idea. A fake true crime documentary about a super intelligent gorilla sounds strange enough to stand out. Jimmy Olsen hosting it was funny on paper, but I can see people getting more interested if Grodd himself becomes the center of the story. DC needs projects that feel different instead of repeating the same superhero formula every time.

Part of me feels bad if Jimmy Olsen really got pushed aside. The idea of having an ordinary guy hosting a documentary about insane DC events sounded fun because it gave viewers someone normal to follow. If Grodd takes over too much, I hope they still keep that grounded perspective instead of turning it into another villain showcase.

I know some fans just want Justice League updates, but I appreciate that DC is trying smaller ideas first. Not every project needs to be a giant crossover event. If this weird documentary succeeds, it could show that the universe has room for different genres. Superhero stories can be crime stories, horror stories, comedies, and mockumentaries too.

Personally, I am more interested in this than another origin story. I have seen heroes discover themselves enough times already. Give me a documentary crew interviewing witnesses about Gorilla Grodd manipulating people from the shadows. That sounds fresh to me, and I am curious how serious they are willing to play it.

I honestly respect James Gunn and Peter Safran for allowing projects like this to exist. Even if it does not work out, at least they are experimenting instead of playing everything safe. A lot of superhero movies and shows start blending together after a while. I would rather see an ambitious odd idea fail than watch another project that feels designed by a checklist.
