Today is the day the Crimson Curse expansion launches in Gwent. The expansion adds over 100 cards to the game, across all playable factions. It also introduces the Poison and Bleeding attacks, the Shield and Vitality defense moves, and the Deathblow and Berserk gameplay mechanics. And vampires.

But that’s not the only Gwent-related development coming out of CD Projekt Red today. The studio took the occasion of this release to announce the development of a smartphone version of Gwent, to arrive later this year on iOS. If you haven’t been keeping up on Gwent you might have assumed the game was available on phones already. It is, in fact, not….but that is being remedied.

“We’ve been preparing long and hard to adapt Gwent to smartphones,” said Jason Slama, Game Director of Gwent: The Witcher Card Game. “Beautiful visuals aside, we’ve tailored much of our technology, including GOG Galaxy which powers Gwent’s multiplayer, to support mobile devices. I think our vision for bringing Gwent to smartphones combines the best we have to offer both in terms of graphics and gameplay. I can’t wait to share more details on the subject with you later this year.”

“Wait a minute, where’s my Android version?” you might be asking….we’re told that there WILL be a Gwent for non-Apple-branded phones eventually, but it will not be released in 2019. The iOS version will be.
