GTA 6 Is As Expensive As You Thought, But Also More So

It’s the day you’ve been dreading: the day Rockstar Games reveals how much they’re going to charge for GTA 6, the most anticipated game of the year. It’s so red-hot, every other publisher is staying out of its way, mashing all their major holiday releases into October. So far, the only willing challenger for GTA 6’s street date has been a Barbie game compilation. With stakes like these, Rockstar is in a position where they could pretty much do anything to their customers and get away with it.

Gulp.

So here’s the deal. Your return to Vice City has been given an $80 ticket price. That’s the sticker most people were predicting…it’s over the norm, but not by too much. If you also predicted that would be the BASE ticket price, you were also right. A $100 Ultimate Edition will be released on the same day that grants exclusive access to a bevy of extra cars, boats, revolvers and five character mod shops your peasant friends can’t access. It’s nothing you need to play the game, and none of it gives an advantage, but it is a LOT of stuff — and I guess it would need to be for $20 extra.

Another thing people have been fretting over regarding GTA 6 is its size. Will it be over 200 GB like rumors say? Will there be a physical edition of GTA 6 to cut down on some of those storage woes? Depends on your definition of “physical.” Rockstar is putting out a box, but that’s all it is…a box, with a download code in it. It’s the largest release to ever ship with just a piece of paper inside, and people are worried about the precedent that could set.

The reality is that the disc drives in he PS5 and XBox models can’t spin fast enough to weave the intricate world Rockstar has created, so it’d all have to go on the drive regardless of whether there was a disc (or two, or three) or not. But if the size does turn out to top 200 gigs, it’s kinda inconsiderate given how expensive extra storage is. How can some people play the game at all?

Two more details: GTA 6 is a single-player only game. Those expecting an upgraded GTA Online will be baffled. Also, it’s a console exclusive. Just PS5 and XBox players can play it. No PC gamers are allowed in this sandbox yet.

If any of this didn’t deflate your enthusiasm, then prepare for November 19, when GTA 6, a game 13 years in the making, will at last be released. (Expecting a trailer at the end of this article? We didn’t get that either.)

The buzz around GTA 6 is insane, and honestly, I'm not surprised at the price tag they're putting on it. With the level of detail and the expansive world they're promising, it's pretty much a given that it'd come with a hefty cost. But I'm just hoping that it delivers on all fronts, story, gameplay, and especially online features. It feels like they have a lot to live up to considering how beloved GTA 5 is.

What do you all think? Do you believe the price will turn some fans away, or is the hype enough to justify it? I'm curious to see how they'll tackle the single-player narrative this time around!

The storage requirement is what worries me more than the price. I can save up for an $80 game, but buying another SSD is a different story. Games are getting so big that I end up deleting other games just to make room. I hope Rockstar found a way to keep the file size reasonable because not everyone wants to keep upgrading storage every year.

I'm actually okay with GTA 6 being single-player only at launch. I miss when Rockstar focused on telling a good story first instead of pushing everyone into online. If they really spent 13 years making this game, I want to experience the campaign without worrying about multiplayer events or live service updates. They can always release an online mode later if they want. A great single-player GTA is enough to make me happy.

The download code inside a physical box feels pointless to me. I enjoy collecting game cases because they remind me of the games I finished over the years. If there's no disc inside, then it doesn't really feel like owning a physical copy anymore. It almost feels like paying extra for plastic packaging. I know technology changes, but I still think collectors deserve a real physical edition if they're spending this much money.
