Some manga stories are short, others are long. Some update all the time, and some have limited runs. And then there’s Hunter x Hunter. Created by Yu Yu Hakusho’s Yoshihiro Togashi, it’s one of the most successful manga of the last 20 years, but its fans often have to play the waiting game. As in…years of waiting. Hunter x Hunter hasn’t had a new chapter since 2018.
..Yoshihiro Togashi has created a Twitter account – and announces 4 new chapters for HUNTER X HUNTER
But the drought may be coming to an end, if only momentarily. Togashi posted on Twitter for the first time yesterday, an account he made just to show off a page still in the process of completion, teased with the words “4 more episodes for the time being” in Japanese.
Hunter x Hunter has been adapted into anime form more than once, but the current incarnation has stalled out due to running out of material.
“From my perspective as a writer, there are still many things in it left that I want to write, that I would enjoy writing,” Togashi told a Shonen Jump interviewer four years ago, the last time a Hunter x Hunter chapter was released. “And so if anyone would be willing to enjoy this ride with me, that is all I can hope for.”
The reason Togashi’s release schedule is so barren is due to health issues on his part — he has a bad back and spends a lot of time these days bedridden. However, he refuses to allow Hunter x Hunter to be drawn by anyone else, nor will he even consider retiring. He’s going to pull this story together “or die trying,” in his words. Hopefully it won’t come to that.
