Superman is a superhero created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, first appearing in Action Comics #1 in June 1938. Published by DC Comics, he is widely regarded as the archetype of the modern superhero.
Born Kal-El on the planet Krypton, he was sent to Earth as an infant by his parents Jor-El and Lara before Krypton"s destruction. Raised as Clark Kent by Jonathan and Martha Kent in Smallville, Kansas, he develops extraordinary abilities under Earth"s yellow sun, including superhuman strength, flight, invulnerability, heat vision, freeze breath, and x-ray vision.
As an adult, Clark moves to Metropolis and works as a reporter at the Daily Planet alongside Lois Lane. He adopts the identity of Superman to protect humanity, guided by the moral values instilled by his adoptive parents. His primary antagonist is Lex Luthor, a brilliant businessman and scientist who views Superman as a threat to human achievement.
Superman has appeared across comics, film, television, and animation for nearly nine decades. In the 2025 DC Universe film Superman, directed by James Gunn, the character is portrayed by David Corenswet.
