Supergirl is a DC Comics superhero, most commonly the Kryptonian Kara Zor-El, created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino. She first appeared in Action Comics #252 in May 1959.
Kara is Superman"s older cousin, sent from Krypton"s Argo City to protect the infant Kal-El. Due to her ship"s delayed arrival, Kara reaches Earth years after her cousin, arriving as a teenager while he is already an established adult hero. Under Earth"s yellow sun, she possesses the same Kryptonian abilities as Superman.
Unlike her cousin, who was raised on Earth from infancy, Kara carries direct memories of Krypton"s culture, people, and destruction. This grief over her lost world has become a defining aspect of the character, particularly in Tom King and Bilquis Evely"s 2022 Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow miniseries.
In the 2026 DC Universe film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Kara Zor-El is portrayed by Milly Alcock, who first appeared in the role during the post-credits sequence of Superman (2025).
