Lex Luthor is a supervillain created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, first appearing in Action Comics #23 in April 1940. He is Superman"s most enduring adversary and one of DC Comics" most iconic villains.
Originally depicted as a mad scientist, Luthor was reimagined in the 1986 reboot by John Byrne as a corrupt billionaire industrialist and CEO of LexCorp. This version of the character views Superman as an alien threat to human self-determination and uses his genius-level intellect, vast wealth, and political influence to oppose him.
Luthor has served as President of the United States in several storylines and has been a member of various villainous organizations including the Injustice League and the Legion of Doom. Despite his villainy, he genuinely believes he acts in humanity"s best interest.
In the 2025 DC Universe film Superman, Lex Luthor is portrayed by Nicholas Hoult.
