Zangyack; most boring villains ever?

Random hand waving like with VS Abaranger could work. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch to say Gai's dream manifestation powers could lead to him somehow coming back to life one final time.

Abaranger never had to deal with a DTV sequel, though. You can handwave a reappearance once; the more you do it, the more you start to strain credibility. (See: Worf's progressively more ridiculous re-appearances in every single TNG movie.)

Well, they included Rio and Mele in Gokaiger even though they could easily have been ignored. So, it doesn't seem like they're worried about that.

Most of their appearances are as empty puppets controlled by Basco (like the Riders that DiEnd controls in Decade) and their appearance in the Legend War could be handwaved, whereas Gai has to return as a full character for 2012 Sentai vs Gokaiger and most likely for a V-cinema movie like the ones that Shinkenger and Goseiger got

Isn't "handwaving" what he's talking about though? Rio and Mele returned from the dead in Geki vs Go-on, and were back again for Gokaiger's Legend War, even though they easily could just have been ignored by Gokaiger's crew. Yet, rather than that, they brought them back again.

Now, yeah, it's true that they aren't proper characters in Gokaiger, just appearing in crowd scenes, but it shows they aren't particularly worried about bringing back people multiple times.

We're only talking about two features where Gai would certainly need to return as a full fledged character anyway, the Gokaiger DTV and the next year's sentai vs Gokaiger, which probably will be released almost one year after the Gokaiger DTV like usual.

A sacrifice by Basco is actually consistant with his 'give and take' philosophy, giving his life for a specific outcome. The Gokaiger on the other hand wouldn't do that. The Gokaiger pirate ethos is all about 'taking what you want', in other words you never ACCEPT a sacrifice as innevitable. You work harder and just grasp your goal, you don't settle for a compromise even if you fail and lose something in the process. You don't give up anything. EVER. So a death in Gokaiger would be a defeat not a noble sacrifice.

In fact I could see a later episode where Basco and the Gokaiger are faced with something really dangerous and Basco decides to sacrifice himself because 'there's no other way, someone has to die to stop this'. but then Marvelous just takes the third option, rushes in, saves Basco and stop the bad thingimajig of the day proving the superiority of his pirate code to Basco's.

Actually, to tie this in to the earlier idea of Gai doing a Noble Sacrifice deal, you could have a situation where this Super Evil Thing that the Gokaigers can't beat head-on shows up and Gai realizes the only way to stop it is by sacrificing himself for the others.

But by this point the other Gokaigers have grown to like Gai and are like "screw that, you're our friend and what kind of friends would we be if we just let you go off and kill yourself like that" and then during the big rescue fight they all learn that while being a hero means that you should be ready to sacrifice yourself for the greater good whenever necessary, it is ALSO a hero's duty to make sure that a situation like that never arises.

... But that would require Gokaiger being a better show than it is and I'm not sure it can pull off something that nuanced at this point.

I dunno, I think they could pull that one off at the level of nuance the show operates at. It would meld easily to the Main Three's MO of Always Doing The Right Thing But Being Totally Tsundere About It.

(Marv thinks...) You're a good person and you shouldn't have to die just because I'm not strong enough, Gai!
(Marv says...) I don't wanna have to clean up your body! Besides, I don't wanna give this guy the satisfaction of killing anyone!

But, that would also be a pretty solid repeat of Goseiger's ending from last year, so I doubt they'd do it twice in a row.
