You know what's sad about American food?

^^^ Well keep in mind that herbs can be potted. I have five long containers, ten 10" pots (bought for a $1 each at Albertsons on clearance), a dozen or so 4" to 6" pots. In fact, I need to pull those from the garage to disinfect so I can start my herb garden. I also potted my herbs in various other containers such as water jugs... well sort of potted. I cut the top and bottoms off and then partially buried the jugs into the ground to keep my herbs roots from spreading. Most herbs have very shallow roots, such as mints, but they love to spread.

What I really need to find again is Purple Russian Basil. I bought it once, a huge 20+" pot for $5.95 at a now closed garden center, and it was so delicious with fresh tomatoes and basil. However, I didn't bring it inside before the first frost and subsequently found it dead the next morning after that first frost. Needless to say, I have never found it again and honestly do not know if that was it's real name. It was a basil that grew three feet high and the leaves were purple.

LOLOLOL At your hubby's "gourmet" food list. Was that lady daft or what!?

And wow Mika...your garden list is pretty spectacular!

I'm not that great at marinating, though I'm awesome at grilling, and I'm a wizard with pasta. Made my own mac-n-cheese last thursday from almost scratch (I didnt have time to make the pasta from scratch)

Tanuki: Homemade Mac-and-cheese is the yummiest! Especially when you add stuff like ground hamburger meat and chili powder to it.

Anyways, I would actually KILL for some food that is made from scratch... even though I can cook myself, but... it's not the same as when my own mother, heck, even my Takasaki Obaa-san makes it.
Though, I'm a bit surprised that lady you described, said any food made from scratch is 'gourmet'?? What the heck... I was under the assumption, that a gourmet food is a one-of-a-kind creation of a special food. Like, Japan has Purple potato Ice cream in Kamakura that was really unique (and tasty).

Hmmm... I'm curious... how purple are those purple basils you described, Mika? Because, I've been looking up and there are a lot of varieties of that type of herbs. There is one in particular, that is REALLY deep in shade, and is called a 'Purple Dark Opal' Basil. But, I don't think that's the right one. :/

It's not Purple Dark Opal, because that is too dark of a purple. It's just slightly lighter but not by much.

Geeze, louize.... Hey Keith, you REALLY need to do something about those damn bots. I'm still looking for Purple Russian/Russian Purple and came across this on Google:

I was actually wondering why THAT came up during my search for the Purple Basil. Basil herbs are related to HJU... yeah...

Whoa...you know, I just noticed the Wild Purple Basil reminded me of Lavender but just on a smaller scale...
I figured it was one of those species of Purple Basils, but I didn't know which one. Not to mention, I wasn't sure about the different aroma and tastes (I know that they are considered 'sweet') that are specific to one of them.

Guh! I wish I wasn't so tight on money and time, because I really would like to try out so many foods, get the most exotic ingredients and try cooking them. T_T

Mints are worse then Basil. At my last count, there are over 300 types of Mints. Guess that's what happens when you continually modify a plant. My personal favorite mints: Chocolate Mint and Pineapple Mint. Chocolate mint goes great in deserts while Pineapple mint goes great with chicken and pork.

...300 types? Good god... The only ones that I'm familiar with are the Peppermint and the Chocolate Mint. Though, the Pineapple Mint is one I have never heard of. I shall keep an eye out for it.

I remember that I use to have a Chocolate Mint herb plant. But, sadly... I killed it, because I was so busy with school that I couldn't take care of it (and, the Arizona heat, where I use to live, was a killer over there). T_T Though, the Peppermint one that we got from a friend first thrived, then died, and I think it's surviving again right now. But, I'm not sure... (I know that my mom was using it for her herbal remedies and cooking one time).
