The narrative world of SPD completely falls apart. I mean -- even Rangerboard, at this point, has seen SPD for the narrative mess it is. And a narrative mess is fine. I love LG, and that makes no fucking sense whatsoever. You want to talk about footage getting mashed for purposes which it does not work for, Kalish seasons are it.
Where is this fantasy world of which you speak? The Mystic Realm has paved roads, and signs of an industrialized world somewhere that is NEVER touched upon. How could Rita have aided in the battle against Octomus' forces so long ago if she was in the dumpster (because the Mystic Source ain't been helping them out lately, and if she's a friend of Udonna's...)? Where is this sense of the big fantasy world? Where is this sense of INTERNAL LOGIC?
NS (much as I dislike it), completely sold me on the sense of the nineteen Ninja Academies spaced out all over the world. Leeann studying in Nepal in particular. She got wind of the Thunder Academy's attack, and was in flight back home when the (unnamed) academy she'd been studying at was attacked. NS works its ass off in those last few eps to pull its narrative together, and it almost works. Oh, the retcons are transparently there, but they are a viable suture on the wound.
Doug was frank enough to admit when he didn't know the answers on NS's world construction. They got lazy. At no time during Dino Thunder did Doug fail to have an answer to a question on how this universe was structured, or how it tied together. I didn't think to ask all the questions I should have, but the man had answers to everything. Similarly, there has never been a question about Animaria Amit did not have an answer about.
So tell me, Keith. How does SPD make you feel, when it clearly does not have a sense of larger universe? As Tom pointed out, the organizational structure of SPD and how it works is a mess. There's some narrative gaps which border on the ludicrous (they continue to doubt time travel is real WHEN SAM IS ON THE TEAM), etc. The entire timeline where Gruumm rules the world but Omni never emerges makes no sense in light of later revelations.
Oh, MF was better, but MF was still basically Sentai footage being bent in shapes which are at odds with themselves. That's why I'm so surprised you would level an insult like "Doug isn't using the footage right" at his work. That man helped create PR. Unlike Bruce, Doug has a deep appreciation for Sentai and PR as distinct things. Bruce, rightly or wrongly, has said PR is adapted Sentai pure and simple. Their job is to translate. And yet -- he's adapted elements which should not to, or contradict one another.
When did Doug do this? Oh, the cloned White Ranger is dopey -- but at no time does it work in DEFIANCE of any of the footage they used. We never see the Dinozords acting like they're capable of talking or higher organizational thought. It seems to me like you judge PR on whether or not it uses the source footage to your liking (or in a way you deem "appropriate"), not whether or not it makes narrative or even logical sense.
I may be misconstruing you here, Keith, but -- seriously, you think SPD paints pictures of a vast, internally logical world? Are you sure you aren't seeing that through the haze of Dekaranger, which DID make internal sense? You said once you haven't seen much Dino Thunder. Have you asked anyone if your perceptions might be mistaken? ARE you the best person to judge the relative strengths of seasons you never saw against ones you did?
