One thing with writing. What is considered "good" and "bad" tends to have more to do with the sophistication of the techniques employed, rather than what sort of emotions a show causes any particular viewer to have.

This is because a viewer's emotional connection to a work of fiction will be purely subjective. A person can have extremely strong feelings about work that is extremely crude and poorly made, for totally personal reasons that spring from his or her individual life experiences.

This is the miracle of fiction. Even stuff that contains a lot of bad will contain a lot of good. It's like how Igadevil says that there's no genuinely bad Kamen Rider-- the way I take that statement is that he believes there's no entry in the franchise that's wholly without merit.

I would agree with that completely. Bad scripts aren't a bad show and bad shows aren't without value. Even being the worst in a given franchise doesn't mean the material is worthless-- or that people who like it are worthless.

I like talking about more concrete, somewhat objective things like what individual shows do well or poorly. Different people who disagree can still find common ground this way-- and people who don't care can just go read another thread, with no harm done to anyone.

Yeah you do. Everything you say about these shows is your personal feelings and opinions. Nothing you say as it involves to good or bad is fact. Even your stuff about the writing in these shows is your own opinions. There is no fact in it.

Because unlike say you or lynxara, most of us watch these shows to have fun. Not spend time dissecting each little writing element.

..and that was trolling but whatever.

It's not a choice between the two extremes of either blindly accepting of every little thing that comes out with no question or critique whatsoever or being a total hater.

Seriously though, I think I can say that Lynx and Matt watch these to have fun as much as anybody. I always like reading what they have to say.

No, it isn't. You appear to be confusing opinions with arguments.

Literary criticism-- the evaluation of writing as good or bad-- is an exercise in argument, not subjective opinion. Criticism has to be about what is and isn't actually in the story or it's not valid. The assessment of an element as good or bad has to be consistent with a comprehensible theory of writing or it's not valid.

It's impossible for anyone's opinion to be valid (or invalid), because opinions don't have truth value. Something is not a matter of opinion merely because disagreement is possible. All good criticism is going to be debatable, since individual perceptions can differ while still possessing truth value.
