Windows Live Messenger will end on March 2013 for Skype

Remember when Microsoft made a deal with Skype? That will happen except mainland China. Thoughts?

No more MSN Messenger, huh? Wow... You know, I've always been more of an AIM user myself, so no skin off my bones. But in recent years, I've notices more and more of my friends and potential friends use MSN Messenger. I feel bad for them more than for myself. EDIT: That is, unless they don't mind switching over to Skype instead.

They'll probably integrate the userbase with Skype's anyways, and besides:

I liked AIM to a point where everyone I knew grew out of that and then we moved to MySpace and then Facebook. The issue with AIM was that it lacked some features within it and have ones that are used by a majority of online clients. Also, it never really advanced when it could have innovated as a social platform rather than be stagnant.

Skype is just very useful for its one thing, but since its integrated with clients like Facebook , its going to last for some time or at least until Facetime is made for Windows and Android.

Ditto. This is pretty annoying, all of my contacts are on MSN. I'm not too fond of chat interface with Skype, it's fugly as hell. I think I might jump back to AIM whenever this happens - or hope that Skype seriously overhauls the way it does chat since it's clearly not geared towards a set of people who use it primarily for text chats.

Microsoft did this before with WLM by forcing everyone who had anything lower down on the totem pole than Vista to upgrade, or else the messenger wouldn't work

If they reorganized Skype and made it like Messenger as well as its usual stuff, I believe people would not mind the transition.

Skype is pretty much the standard in the industry for video chat anyways, they just need to make transitioning for the older users a snap and not miss the original.

I feel Skype's a one trick pony anyways as I barely use it where its other functions aren't exactly cutting edge or on par, because if it had a Textfree interface [and free texting to boot] on Skype and integrated the Messenger system, I don't see a big deal..

So people still use AIM? Hmmm.... interesting.

I stopped using messenger a long time ago. I think Skype is fine cause not only can u message, u can also voice chat and video chat. Who knows, maybe after this they'll improve messaging.

The email accounts registered under Hotmail/Live will still work, right?
