Why does no one discuss older sentai anymore?

With many people, the first thing they ever see is the best. There are lots of people in the fandom who will give lauding comments about modern Sentais because they're the shows they started with, it's new to them, and have no idea of the style of the past. They think Sentai has always been the way it is now. In some places one even gets attacked if one dares to say something negative about the current state of the franchise

Frankly, being an old-skooler, I'm with The Next on this. It doesn't hurt to have a thread about the ups and downs of Super Sentai in general.

Although there are things about the newer Super Sentai that I like (the Boukengers have the best costumes of the newer teams, IMHO, and Doggy Kruger is my absolute favorite character in Dekaranger), they just don't pack the same punch as older shows do.

I agree that the 70s and 80s are indeed the Golden Age of Super Sentai. Dynaman is still my favorite series (it's the first one I saw, thanks to Night Flight), but Dynaman was what got me into the series. I enjoyed Goranger and Battle Fever J a lot. Seeing early episodes of Goranger brought American comic-book superheroes to mind (as did BFJ). IMHO, Dairanger was the last best series for me.

Another reason I prefer the older shows, was that the heroes, even though they were pretty-idols in their day, were definitely more mature! Men looked like tough, strong men, and women were basically amazons! Compared to all the cutesy teenagers of today. They were wimps outside their costumed counterparts, and are so mechanical. And what the hell is with those pajama-like uniforms!?

But there I go rambling again . . . back to the subject at hand:

There are three kinds of people:

-True Super Sentai fans who'll probably watch it, because it's, well, Super Sentai.
-Power Rangers fans, who got into Super Sentai by way of PR.
-People who have similar tastes to American annie-mae fans, ie. fascination for bishi heroes. This applies also to many of the current viewers in Japan.

Generally, Super Sentai is SUPPOSED to be aimed at the kiddie crowd, but kids deserve better than this. It seems that every superhero (with the exception of Ultraman the Next and Ultra Seven X) is all bishi. There's no variety. And one of these days, it'll lose its relevance. (I hear that bishi is somewhat in decline in Japan, and people are going for tough action stars like Vin Diesel.)

And LET'S NOT FORGET, some fans who love new tokusatsu generally blast old stuff for being "fake," "cheesy," "outdated," etc., and lean towards the more "stylized" and "realistic." stuff (and in some cases, dark and tormented). That really hurts. (This applied to the newer Godzilla films, also.)

So yes, you'll be seeing quite a bit of talk about newer Super Sentai, because it's new and treated as a big deal (so of course older stuff will be pushed into the background; in some cases, they don't mean to be disrespectful about that, but in others, that's pretty different). It's all about relevance.

I don't participate in any discussion of the newer stuff, as I've already made it very plain that I lost my faith in newer Super Sentai years ago, partly because of its increasingly close relationship with Power Rangers. I see no more point in it. (I don't care for localizations very much.)

And yeah. Not everything is gonna be subbed. people need to learn that and if they dont like it they can study their way into japanese instead of just sitting on their asses complaining that this or that isnt subbed. I watch tokuhour cause its raw and its live and i can understand a pretty decent amount of everything going on. I'v watched raw old school shows like Kamen Rider Black and Ultraman Leo and even some New gen tokuheros that dont get love like Zan Saber ALL RAW. and let me tell you. i loved every moment of it. Without seeing Little Words near the buttom felt good and understanding by translating with my BRAIN felt really good. So take the time to watch the raws provided for you by people such as Momotaros and Tokurawshelp. Im even willing to say that most of the stuff i learned in japanese i learned from watching RAW.

iight im done.

Later.

I totally agree with you, John Cassidy. Sentai of the late 70s and early 80s(up to Dairanger) was so much better than the stuff we get nowadays. I'm just not into newer sentai, I feel it's too cliche based and artificial. What I liked about the older ones, the characters actually had personality. I tried watching Gaoranger and Gekiranger but it was so different from the 80s stuff I enjoy, I couldn't last through it. The characters just were too robotic to me, and the mecha and stuff just didn't have the feel that makes me love mechs like DynaRobo and Denjirobo so much. Plus I felt it got too cheesy at times. Older series like Denjiman, JAKQ, and Dynaman had a fantasy approach with a good realism feeling. I just can't get that from new sentai. Plus the CGI just doesn't seem as good to me as the way cool models of the 80s and early 90s. The actors playing the members just are too artificial in looks. Plus the villians are nowhere near as cool or menacing as villians like Bandora, Meggido(SP?), or Hedrian.

I apologize to any newer sentai fans, you can like it all you want, I just won't join you.

All I can say is that with old school sentai, you can point to one of the warriors and say "thats a good role model". Goonger makes it seeem that its ok to act like you're jacked up on sugar and run around acting immature and stupid and still wim against the bad guys. They are fortunate and lucky that Gaiarc don't have their act together either because heaven forbid that they faced Gorma(Dairanger), Volt(Liveman) or even Neo empire Gear(Bioman), it would be game over for them. But them again, there are some pretty good stuff in new school too.

It just annoys me to all hell when Go-onger and other new stuff is discussed like the plague, and older sentai ignored and stepped on. Why? IMO the 80s and early 90s was when sentai was in it's Golden Age.

Because IMO most people only want to discus what they watch subbed, or stuff they saw after they found sentai via PR.
