It's a sad form of relationship validation for young women that they aren't getting from their real boyfriends (because, as we all know, "the perfect guy" doesn't exist). I actually have buddies that have been dumped by their chicks because they aren't enough like Edward. I haven't read the books (I like being smart), but apparently he's supposed to be ssssuper great because he's dark and mysterious, and is just enough of a jerk to her to keep her guessing (but not enough to get mad at her for her deservingly frustrating quirks, like pot-smoking), and because they only do things together like talk about their feelings, have midnight rendezvous, and play tag with other sparkly vampires, instead of having to do things that real couples have to do together, like have the same argument three nights a week, share a bathroom and wonder if their spouse is sleeping with their best friend.
