"Why anime fans pirate anime"...

I sympathize with those that won't get legit releases in their countries as well, but no one is entitled to anime. These people think they are OWED free anime. Also while I do feel bad for those that can't get releases in their region, I don't feel sorry AT ALL for people that simply whine because something doesn't come out "fast enough" for them.

Actually anime is very easy to get. I do know of some anime series and films you can get legit from HK which pretty much wipes out much excuses to buy legit releases. The only problem is that there are not many series released legit there but there's still some series they could feast their eyes on.

For instance , I bought legit R3 versions of two Godzilla films from PlayAsia from a publisher called Universe Laser and I can say I am proud to have them legitimately because I could have bootlegged it but I went the extra mile and researched alternatives. This is where my biggest point comes into play. People do not realize or fail to realize we live in a globalized economy where we can buy legitimate products from any corner of the world without any excuse . You know, there is a place called eBay ?

You do not even have to go to eBay for stuff because even stores from Australia like Madman and a few other ship overseas I believe.

Expecting to get something for free is BS because lets say you are the creator of such and such anime. If you put all that work into the anime and all these people are knocking it off you'd be as pissed if not the publishers themselves. Although I occasionally do , I make sure there is a legit release whether it be in America or overseas before I resort to bootlegs, meaning I rarely do it .

If you want to support your animes , please try to buy their releases and if you cannot buy it because its too expensive, hold out and wait. If it's what you really like, it shouldn't matter whether it takes a few months or a few years .

No it's really not, but if it makes you feel better to believe that while getting free ****.. Hey what ever makes you happy :laugh: You see I am sure there are cases where fansubs are better, and there are LOTS of cases where they are not better. But you making generalizations just to justify getting free ****...Hah.

I'm not really sure if he was saying fansubs are necessarily better. It's just that they are often the only option, even for things you may really like.

One of my favorite series is Lupin III, which I feel is better than most other anime on the market. Now, I have bought every legit release that I could get my hands on.

Problem is that, a very huge portion of it still don't have official releases in the U.S. So, where do I turn? Fansubs.

However, I can all ready get involved in this conversation. I support official releases, but even I know that there can be differences and lack of content at times. When Media Blasters released Kamen Rider THE FIRST, I immediately deleted my copy of TV-Nihon's fansub and bought a copy of the movie. Right away, I noticed there were differences between the subs of the official release, some things were translated in the form of generalizations rather than a perfect translation, and the ED music wasn't translated at all. But even so, I still feel glad for buying this movie and supporting this. Increases the chances of getting an official release of THE NEXT.

And that's not to say every company is the same, either. Media Blasters is not that well known. The bigger companies are getting a lot better and translating the shows and keeping content in tact. I'll even be surprised what is kept in the dub when I watch certain animes on TV.

And it's true, fansubs aren't perfect. Oh sure, reading them and the translation notes has helped me learn a little more about Japanese culture, but that doesn't mean they are perfect. Fansubbers can't get in touch with the official Japanese companies to make sure their translations are perfect, which is something that the American companies tend to do. And sometimes they leave certain words and phrases untranslated when there is little to no need to leave it untranslated, they just like the sound of the Japanese language better. That annoys me at times, but I tough it out and wait for official releases.

It makes me sad to think that fans would rather KEEP their illegal copies of something rather than get in touch with companies and tell them that they demand a release with better quality. Just contact them! They'll listen! Funimation, for example, will practically bend over backwards to give us all the best release of anime possible. They are listening! They will try their hardest to please everyone! That's why they released so many versions of DBZ, that's why they saved One Piece from 4Kids, and that's why they are getting to rights to as many anime as possible.

my take is that alot of times still, especially with one piece is that there's still a waiting period and fans still want something at least tangible to keep on a harddrive (in this case that i'm seeing) and we don't want to bother with sites like Hulu who have ads, choppy framerate, lower to non feasible resolution (really? 240p?) and long loading times and what-not to see the shows you want. If given a choice, i'd be choosing to have my anime as a HQ 720p MP4 quality. Then again, this is just me.

All I heard you say was "I am impatient and I deserve it now now now". The adds keep the subbed anime coming. If you don't want Hulu, then buy the DVD's. Either way you said you don't want to wait and deserve it now now now.:redface2:

There's zero reason to pirate anime when it's available for free on Hulu and when there are legitimate releases of the DVDs. Yes, Hulu has ads and the quality is not stellar, but you're getting the show without paying a dime to anyone so it's a pretty damn good tradeoff IMO. And yes, some of the DVDs and Blu-rays are expensive but at least there's an American company licensing it and getting it over here.

There are so many high quality anime DVD releases these days that I'm not sure why anyone would take the chance on pirated versions. It's just impatience and cheapness I guess.

Edit: I should add that fansubs for shows that have no DVD available with subs or are not on hulu or whatever is a different beast. After all, how would any of us watch most toku shows?

I know it's available on Hulu (dubbed and subbed) with a delay of four days. Not bad at all.
