What are your issues with Gaim?

But that isn’t what happened though. They had more pressing concerns since they learn from Micchy that Kouta is after the Overlords, to try and make them control the forest which endangers Ryouma/Sid/Yoko’s personal stake in Yggdrasil. And of course once the secret gets it they throw him off a cliff and it becomes a free for all.
That's exactly what happened. As soon as it was no longer necessary for the current plot/drama, it was ignored. "More pressing concerns" do not make that one cease to exist, and that concern had them ready to, again, nuke the entire city - it was a driving point for weeks. Then it's just dropped. Poof. Gone.

Yes, they had convenient distractions, but that doesn't change the fact that they never even cared about the issue once the show stopped needing it to be one. It's kind of similar to the "shock value" thing that other users have mentioned - the big things are used for the big moments, then dropped as soon as the "shock" is over.

Because no one can stop it. The whole reason Yggdrasil wants to murder 6 billion people and why Kouta is so desperate to obtain the Golden Fruit in the first place is that no one can stop the spread of Helheim. You even have Takatora admitting that he can barely handle it when it was just cracks appearing and inves and vines popping up everywhere. Now it’s an entire city being engulfed by Helheim and the Inves everywhere with only 8 people around to deal with the Inves. How could they do anything about it?
That's not what I'm talking about. I'm not saying everyone should stop and try to figure out how to stop it, I'm saying any non-Rider being near the fruits without eating them at all makes no sense.

I assume because the nut lockseeds are the most plentiful in contrast to the more rare fruit ones. And out of those: pinecone, acorn and walnut: the pinecone is the most versatile (able to use sidearms/flamethrower and pilot and work machinery) and has the best range (in contrast to Gridon)
That's in-show logic. I'm talking about the potential wasted in not creating a brand new suit for the role altogether - say, a new nut that would do the exact same thing for example.

The undersuits are programmed into the belts and aren’t in the lockseeds. The only time this was an inconsistency is when Yoko uses Ryouma’s belt to transform. Otherwise there is no inconsistency here.
There were a few other moments in the series when characters got new/different Sengoku drivers but still ended up with the forms they had had previously.

Because Gaim is basically the same as Zangetsu minus the headpiece.
... And...? That really doesn't address what I was saying.

IMO I don’t think Urobuchi really cared about this mechanic other than that time with Kouta using Banana. But it goes back to him not really caring about powerups like pineapple, strawberry or the jinba cherry or peach. The only power-ups that mattered to him seemed to be Jinba, Kachidoki and Kiwami for Gaim and Zangetsu Shin and Yomatsu Heguri for Micchy.
Maybe so, but that doesn't change how I feel about its execution.

This shows a huge misunderstanding of the nature of the armor system in Gaim. None of it is “naturalâ€, they were all created by Ryouma. It’s just that Kiwami Arms can call all armors because it’s just that powerful and the embodiment of ultimate power.
As I recall, Ryouma talked about "developing" the Energy Lock Seeds. On the other hand, when you just pick a fruit in Helheim, you get a Lock Seed if you're wearing a belt - "natural" may have been the wrong word, but the point was that Energy Lock Seeds clearly required more human intervention than the regular kind (and we never see anyone just pick one), therefore, I believe them being a part of Kiwami doesn't make sense based on what we observe of the different types of Lock Seeds.

Because the data for Baron’s undersuit or “pre-arms†(as you call it) is stored in the belt and Ryouma kept the original Baron undersuit for Kaito’s belt. And the only alteration to the Gaim undersuit was to the helmet. Furthermore the Genesis Core and the Genesis Driver in the show are two completely different things. Unlike in the toy, it’s not the latch from the Genesis Driver that becomes the Genesis Core.
I don't recall any of these things being mentioned in the actual show. One could infer them, but that's not really the point. Likewise, even if it's the "only" alteration, it's still an alteration. Likewise, I don't think they ever actually said in the show that the belts came with the things programmed either. That doesn't mean it's unlikely, but as I mentioned before, there are inconsistencies with that.

These things are less messes or contradictions and just things that you either don't get or disagree with (which does not make it a contradiction).
And I don't think you understand the purpose of the thread. These are issues I take with the show and its execution of, things that I think could have been done better, etc., not things I'm looking for explanations for.

What are you talking about? He shows up throughout the Energy Rider introduction. Zangetsu Shin uses him to incriminate and scapegoat and fight the Armored Riders. He is used again in their attempt to steal Kouta’s belt and on his own initiative tries to break up the Beat Riders’ gathering. He is MIA in the episodes which detail Kouta finding out all the dark secrets of Helheim (including Yuuya’s fate) and that has less to do with Energy Riders and more like he would stick out like a sore thumb in those stories (much like the Toqgers did in the Special between 23 and 24)
Uh. If you hadn't cut out the rest of my quote, as I never said he wasn't not present, but rather talked about how seriously he was being taken/used, you would know exactly what I'm talking about.

How is her motivation any different from Ryouma’s desire to “evolve†humanity with his belts or Sid’s desire for power that no can tell him what to do ever again? Really if you are talking about her role within Yggdrasil: she and Sid are pretty much the muscle to Takatora and Ryouma’s leadership and brains. But her motive isn’t anymore ridiculous than Ryouma’s or Sid’s.
I'm... not really seeing anything ridiculous about either of their motives. Hers, on the other hand, is just a letdown. There's nothing "wrong" with it, but it serves very little purpose and just serves to show the missed potential. Her only goal was to push someone else's goal. At least Ryouma and Sid had goals of their own. Likewise, they had a lot of outside roles in the story, which is what I was talking about. She didn't. She was Ryouma's secretary for a little while and then Kaito's. Woo.

Kaito would have been killed by Demushu in the cave in their first meeting if she hadn’t saved her, he wouldn’t have gotten the Genesis Driver from Ryouma because she was the one who pressed him to give Kaito another chance and Kouta wouldn’t have been so insecure about him getting the fruit.
The "other than fight scenes" comment I made covers the first part, the second is one thing, fine, but hardly something of note, especially in comparison to every single other Rider (and even some of the non-Riders) in the show.

I think Kiwami is pretty much his monster form. But also like the original Riders who are cyborgs/kaizo ningen while appearing human, Kouta can also appear human (and bled red), but in reality he is not human anymore.
I get that, it's just something I would have liked to see and an issue I take with the show since we've had heroes who became (or even WERE) monsters before.

According to the official site, Kurokage is the most adequate for team work and combined attacks compared to the other Riders.
And a new Rider they could have been invented to fill that same role. That was... never really addressed in the story either, so good for the site, I guess?

According to the official site, any Genesis Driver can get its Core part detached. There was nothing special about Kouta's Genesis Core in that sense. Although obviously, he's the only one to use it and only with Orange because it's the only suit that exists.
The fact that there's nothing special about is another point to that there should have been more then.

I don't think that was ever implied. According to the official site, the Energy Lockseed are the same as the standard ones (transformations of Helheim fruits thanks to Ryoma's tech), but more technologically advanced.
As I mentioned above, there was evidence for thinking such. They didn't ever pick an Energy Seed and Ryouma went on and on about "developing" them - this was never the case for the other Lock Seeds. "The official site" sure apparently likes having information that they couldn't include in the show for some reason (a really poor form of storytelling in my opinion - if you can't include something relevant in the story, the way I see it, it doesn't exist) though, sheesh.

Baron has his Sengoku Drive data according to the official site, which is also probably the excuse for him looking different from Duke, in spite of also using Lemon. However, still going by the official site, in spite of not looking like it, Baron Lemon Energy is supposed to have an Energy Arms undersuit. The parts and descriptions are all altered to match an Energy Rider's, although some are simplified since there's no actual visual change.
Rather than looking like Duke, my point is that the change should have been as significant as Zangetsu to Zangetsu Shin was. This "oh Ryouma programmed it that way lol" just seems like a convenient excuse to avoid keeping things consistent.

Gaim was the first test belt Yggdrasil publicly gave out. Probably needed to show off the features in the Beat Riders Hotline advertising and have one solid test subject to use it for Ryouma to create the Sonic Arrow.
While that makes sense, there not being any other Musou Sabers doesn't - and my point was from an out-of-show design aspect, not so much what the explanation in the show might be.

Fruits are badass...Gokaiger got F'ed over...Garo becomes an anime...Godzilla is no longer an fish eating iguana...nothing is impossible these days...c'mon Will Smith as Ultraman

yeah the whole finishers squash, au lait, sparkings not that but come on that sound so dumb especially on sengoku driver. genesis not too bad without au lait but it still has a freaking straw. and barons finishers, my god worst ever. bananas to hit people. if I were baron, I would never use my finisher

i dont see anything wrong with any of those things

They didn't ever pick an Energy Seed and Ryouma went on and on about "developing" them - this was never the case for the other Lock Seeds.

Because the Sengoku Driver and its lockseeds are developed before the show, while the Genesis Driver and Energy lockseeds were developed during the show. The whole transformation of the Helheim fruits into lockseeds was due to Ryoma's technology, not a natural process. There never any "lockseeds" aside from the ones created by Ryoma's technology or for his technology (in the case of the lockseeds given to Kouta by Sagara).

That part is clear in the show itself, so I don't get from where there's this impression that the Lockseeds were "natural" in the first place (in order to allow the Energy ones to be somehow more artificial in comparison).

Rather than looking like Duke, my point is that the change should have been as significant as Zangetsu to Zangetsu Shin was. This "oh Ryouma programmed it that way lol" just seems like a convenient excuse to avoid keeping things consistent.

Well, production-wise, it was a last minute upgrade thrown in just due to Baron's popularity. In fact, the site took months to make a full profile for Baron Lemon (it initially only had stat numbers during that period, without text descriptions), unlike most other updates, so, yeah, it is basically an official excuse written after the fact.

Considering that Baron Lemon Energy was a late addition, yet Kaito being Kouta's final opponent is one thing that actually matches up with the "possible future" scene, I wonder how they originally planned for Kaito to even survive to the end without getting irrelevant. Maybe he was supposed to become an Overlord earlier, but they decided he needed something as an in-between point.

Honestly, this should have been an all-round series-in review thread as opposed to a one-sided hate fest. But regardless...

People like to go on about the "show, don't tell" thing in writing, but never really accuse Gaim of it, when Gaim...is like a bad play, really. We're told of all of this interesting stuff that's happening off-screen or in-between episodes, but all we're shown is characters sitting around at either Gaim's base or Gorou-chan's joint. The show's either too cheap or unwilling to really commit to showing you the severity of the situation; any other Rider show would have filmed some brief bits of panic elsewhere in Zawame, Japan or the world to convey just what's going down. We get a couple of lines of dialogue, mostly from rubber suits. "The world's been told of Zawame's shadiness, and its reaction will be most interesting, although you viewers will never find out. You dumb humans, you sealed off the city and only convey that by having characters huddle in a room like a cheap zombie movie. Yeah, our portals are opening and spreading Helheim throughout the world. Yeah, the world's retaliating with an attack on Zawame, but we reversed it. A now a word from the real overlords of the show, Bandai..."

I would argue that that's all due to the perspective in which the story is told. We see the world from a select few characters' eyes and the limited vision adds to the reality, in my opinion.

And for all of the "Gaim is a return to the early Heisei norm!" Well, no. The early Heisei shows wanted to emphasize the DORAMA -- they made their characters feel like actual people. The early Heisei shows tried to be more grounded. Gaim's a cartoon. Gaim might be more "serious" than something like Fourze or Wizard, but most of the characters are plucked from an anime. It's really easy to sit there and imagine Gaim as an anime, especially a cartoonish character like Ryouma.

I'm sorry, but as an anime fan, I'm pretty taken aback by that generalization. Anime isn't a genre, but a medium. There are anime that do use caricatures, but there are many more that don't.

Also, I will fight to the death against the "show, don't tell" rule that people apply to visual media. Just because it is a visual medium doesn't mean that we should completely discount the auditory and linguistic nature of communication. Films and movies are exceedingly versatile and exposition can be used to great effect to convey ideas.

I don't really have any issues with Gaim that I can think of, except that the few attempts at humor are more-often-than-not embarrassing rather than actually appealing to my sense of humor.

Regarding the silly humor in general, I think we have to be a little more reflexive when watching shows like this. Toei's not going to completely remove the comic relief characters to appeal to the kids, so factors like these really need to be taken into consideration.

Also, it's an old complaint, but...the fruit stuff's still stupid. It still, 45 episodes later, will take me out of the fight when Baron's killing people with giant CGI bananas.

Compared to your other criticisms, this is a little superficial, don't you think?

All that being said, I do have to agree that there is some severe lack of character development in some respects.

Maybe they just have him as regular Baron till he become Lord Baron by having him use more Lock Seeds or have him rely on strategy and tactics rather than blunt force.
