What are the keys to make a good Toku series?

Its toku, you're not gonna get that realistic with people in colorful suits fighting a themed monster sent by some mysterious organization to execute some random plan every week only to be defeated by the hero's or heroine's giant robot.

I'm pretty sure he means believable in the way that Kuuga and Agito are more believable. How the police are involved (like they would be in real life) and in some cases how they team up with the hero. Hibiki was more believable in the fact that all of the Riders got along. Stuck up, lone wolfs don't succeed in a team environment in real life. In general, having a setting that is more down to Earth.

Obviously there has to be room for the fantastical, but there's no reason why it can't reflect the real world as well.

Yeha, I think he means something like Ryukendo, where the police are present and some members are actually part of the secret organization. Or GoGoV and Ohranger, if you want to include Sentai.

A good storyline/plot is definitely key. They should also stay away from too much of an episodic monster of the week format. Gekiranger was pretty good with keeping the storyline going in each episode even if it was just a tidbit.

Compelling characters are the other half i look for, mainly in the villains because they're usually lacking the most.

True, but once you get there it starts to break down. I'm rewatching Kuuga. Around episode 7-9 someone lists the body count at around 278 (or 87) including police officers.

287 people dead. In one city. How are there any officers left? Where's the government? And this is relatively early in the show. It's not like they stop killing cops. Who's replacing them? Why is the civilian populace just walking around like everything's okay? Seriously, *none* of the shows make any sort of sense from a realistic perspective.

I could care less about real life crap. I get enough real life every day. I watch toku for the outlandishness of it.

You know, maybe toku isn't for you if you want believable

It's not just toku, getting your audience's belief is important in many genres from movies to tv shows.

That's what draws people into the show/movie itself. If audience cannot connect to the story. You fail... I mean the show's writer.

Other things you will want to take note is the theme and also the atmosphere.

That's what the characters are for in Toku. Toku is about fancy mecha, heroes in bright spandex, and monsters that grow big. The stories help flesh out the characters.
