What are the best comics for someone who isn't into superhero stories?

[MartianManhunter51]

I'm looking to explore comic books but not really into the traditional superhero genre. I've heard great things about works like "Saga" and "Sandman," but I'm curious about what else is out there. What are some titles or series that offer compelling stories, unique art styles, or interesting themes outside the superhero framework? Would love some recommendations!

If you're looking to explore comics beyond the superhero realm, there are tons of fantastic options out there that showcase unique storytelling and art.

One title you shouldn't miss is "Maus" by Art Spiegelman. It's a Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel that uses anthropomorphic characters to tell a gripping story about the Holocaust and Spiegelman's relationship with his father. The art style is simple yet powerful, and the narrative is both haunting and deeply moving.

Another great option is "Fun Home" by Alison Bechdel. This graphic memoir explores Bechdel's upbringing in a small-town funeral home and her complex relationship with her father. The art is beautifully illustrative, and the themes of identity, family, and sexuality are explored in a profound and relatable way.

If you're interested in something surreal and whimsical, "The Arrival" by Shaun Tan is a wordless graphic novel that depicts the immigrant experience through stunning, detailed illustrations. It conveys deep emotions without the need for text, making it a unique reading experience.

For something a bit more fantastical and adventurous, "Bone" by Jeff Smith is a fantastic blend of light-hearted storytelling with epic fantasy elements. It follows the Bone cousins in a whimsical yet perilous journey that ultimately tackles themes of friendship and bravery, all while maintaining a charmingly cartoonish art style.

Lastly, "Locke & Key" by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodríguez is a fantastic horror/fantasy series that revolves around a mysterious family estate filled with magical keys that unlock various supernatural abilities. The dark themes and intricate plot make for a compelling read, and the artwork amplifies the eerie atmosphere.

These titles should give you a solid starting point, and I hope you find something you love in this diverse medium!
