Utah to possibly make miscarriages a crime

They want to make intentional miscarriages illegal, as they should be, because such activity is dangerous. There is a reason why abortions have a cut-off date, and that is because soon after it, the foetus is simply too far developed to abort.

The only person it's directly dangerous to is the mother. If she accepts that and still wishes to follow through then it's none of the governments business. It sucks, it really does, but it's HER decision of what to do with HER body.

If this passes then it could make any intentional harm to yourself illegal. So cutters, suicidals, etc etc should all be jailed as well? What they do sucks and it's dangerous, but it's their choice.

How about instead of making things illegal; we offer free, extensive, and most importantly UNBIASED counseling services?

Most women feel they are at a dead end or that there's nothing better they can do. An unbiased counselor can at least assist in helping them find what choice is right for them.

Unfortunately the only current options for women in these situations is highly biased counseling that's extremely expensive, or "cheaper" methods.

This is not something that should be the governments business.

I do agree that if you pay $150 to get a miscarriage then it better work.

but they can jump off the stairs and say it was an accident, you can punch your own gut and say that the miscarriage just happened. the girl was dumb to do it while she was 7 months pregnant.

and doing harm to yourself should not be illegal, of course I think that cutters should be cough and send to a rehab clinic or something so they learn that what they are doing is stupid and won't help them. and they are a danger to society.

Normally, this would be akin to making dying illegal because the state has a problem with suicide, but there's more to it than just that.

This bill is just the result of heavy pro-life sentiment in Utah. It's the natural outcome of how a democracy is supposed to work.

It's not "Big Brother is watching you" at all.

The issue the state is making, as I read it as a Poltical Science major, is not so much about "freedom of choice" as it is about controling an illegal, underground activity. SCOUTS has ruled that the state has the legal right, under it's policing powers, to protect the health and safety of it's residents.

It has also been made clear by the courts that abortion is only legal with provsions. As a medical procedure, is only legal if preformed by a heathcare profesional, and within a certain time in the prengnacy. The wording of the law is designed to prevent the loop-hole of getting an illegal abortion and blaming it on a miscarage.

Remember, this is Utah we're talking about; 58% to 72% Mormon with a majority conservative Republican population. They were probibly set off by the fact we're talking about the end result of the actions of a 17 year old.
