By default, SAVE and SAVE AS... will save your work as .XCF which means you can only view it on GIMP. This file extension will let you edit your work. (me) but if you want to save it as it is then .jpg or .png for better quality
If my understanding on your question is correct, you want to remove the bg from the pic you have. It's called RENDERING. You can render in many ways: using the PATH TOOL (B) or QUICK MASK (Shift + Q).
For me I use the PATH TOOL. It's easier to use than Quick Mask especially for bigger pictures.
When you click the PATH TOOL (B), Path to Selection is available in the TOOL OPTIONS Dialog Box.
Create a Path along the image/character/render you like then select PATH TO SELECTION > SHRINK by 1px (Edit > Shrink) > FEATHER by 2px (Edit > Feather) > APPLY LAYER MASK (Right-click on your layer > Apply layer mask). If you want to keep those renders for future use, Save it with a .png extension.
Now, putting the render into you image/sig.
OPEN AS LAYERS > YOUR RENDER and it will be now in your
You can also use this: Open you render > Alpha to Selection (Right-click on the image layer > Alpha to selection) > COPY (Ctrl + C) > Click your image window > Paste (Ctrl + V) > New Layer (Right Click on the PASTED LAYER > New Layer)
