Tiga Gaiden is still a gaiden because it is an additional material based on Tiga. For your information, Gaiden doesn't always mean direct to video. As long as it is supplementary material or side story it can be called Gaiden. Commonly, it's use on story not considered officially canon, but sometimes it can be used for canon material too. Gaia and Dyna's direct to video was not call a Gaiden because they can be considered a sequel and midquel, respectively. But the usage of the word has become blurred recently, with story that can be considered sequel such as Armored Darkness calling itself gaiden. Generally though, Gaiden are stories that fans doesn't have to see to really understand a particular story or just an expansion of a plot point only shown briefly in the main series

What makes Dyna's direct-to-video (I presume you're talking about "The Return of Hanejiro") an "interquel"?

The opening notes of "The Return of Hanejiro" specifically said that it took place after episode 47 "Farewell Hanejiro" but before the series finale arc (episode 49) where Dyna was sucked into the wormhole. So in a way it is not a sequel to the series but some sort of extra episode that took place within the series.

I had seen a version with the dialogue translated into English, but it had nothing of any sort of "opening note" about the timing of the ep, other than Hanejiro saying "goodbye" to Dyna/Asuka. I had thought that maybe it was an "AU" re-write of the final episodes, since there were numerous changes made to various characters and so forth.

Although, come to think of it, Absolute Ultraman also said it was an episode set three months before the end ...

At least, nowadays, the gaidens are fitting directly into continuity, rather than being set aside.

yeah you right. But hey, back to Armored Darkness.. that should be Mebius movie or gaiden? because i see that Ryu is now Captain, new member of GUYS, and Mirai back to earth. That should be a Sequel of Mebius final episode right???(sorry bad english)
